Here we sit on the precipice of 2022, which is hopefully a shiny new start and not “2020 II.” One of the more optimistic outlooks we can share in the new year is the prospect of further EV adoption, led by an absolute slew of new EV models from all of the major names in vehicles. Below are some of the most anticipated electric vehicles scheduled to arrive in 2022, along with a little blurb about each so you can start planning which ones you want to test drive first.

After sharing its quarterly deliveries to cap off 2021, General Motors revealed just how rough of a Q4 it had in terms of EV deliveries. While the legacy automaker has recently unveiled several new and exciting EVs to come, GM’s current EV output is quite nominal, opening the door for rival Ford to carry its electrified momentum to become the #2 EV automaker in the US behind Tesla.

During its “Global EV Day” presentation day at CES 2022, Vietnamese automaker VinFast introduced its entire lineup of upcoming electric vehicles, covering five different market segments. By vowing to go all-electric by the end of 2022, VinFast has already rebranded its two flagship EVs to remove the “e” for electric, creating one cohesive lineup that includes three new electric vehicles now introduced.

Chinese EV automaker GAC Aion announced the start of sales for its anticipated SUV, the LX Plus. After announcing an NEDC range of 1,000 km this past November, GAC Aion has now shared a slightly longer range alongside other specs for Chinese consumers, including pricing.

At CES 2022, REE Automotive announced the start of trials of its all-new EV platform specifically designed for commercial delivery vehicles and walk-in vans called the P7. According to REE, this new entirely flat platform was designed based on specifications from one of the world’s largest delivery companies.

Automotive manufacturing powerhouse Magna International is kicking off 2022 by highlighting its EtelligentForce technology, a 4WD EV powertrain system designed specifically for pickup trucks and light commercial vehicles. Magna’s EtelligentForce was designed to maintain a pickup’s full capabilities without compromising payload or towing capacities.

Fleet EV developer Lightning eMotors has unveiled a new rolling chassis, purpose-built for Class 4 and 5 commercial EVs. The proprietary Lightning eChassis can support 1,500 lbs greater Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) on average compared to other commercial vehicles in the same class. With the debut of its new eChassis, Lightning eMotors has claimed the title of the first commercial EV manufacturer to offer both purpose-built trucks and electrified conversions of legacy OEM platforms.

As Ford enters its final phase of pre-production on its highly anticipated F-150 Lightning pickup, it has announced another doubling of its production capacity on the new EV. The US automaker expects to scale Michigan production to 150,000 Lightning EVs by mid-2023, adding to massive overall BEV outputs.

EV charging network, Blink, kicked off this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) by sharing news of seven new charging products, the largest unveiling in its thirteen year history. Blink products include multiple versions of fleet and home chargers, as well as new public chargers and software for customers.

German automaker Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new prototype that represents the future possibilities in EV range and efficiency. The Mercedes-Benz VISION EQXX features an ultra-efficient electric drivetrain, lightweight engineering and is styled with sustainable materials. While the EQXX remains a prototype, its initial specs are staggering, offering a wealth of optimism for future EVs from Mercedes.

Autonomous driving technology company TuSimple announced that it has completed what it is calling the world’s first fully-autonomous semi-truck ride on open public roads without a human present in the vehicle and without human intervention.

Infant automaker VinFast recently held a ceremony at its manufacturing complex in Hai Phong, Vietnam, to celebrate its first batch of VF e34 EVs. The VF e34 marks VinFast’s first model and the first ever electric vehicle to be sold in Vietnam. The start of production is also the first step in VinFast bringing its EVs to the US market.

Arrival’s flagship Bus EV has begun proving ground testing in the UK before entering full production in 2022. The Arrival Bus marks the first of several electric vehicles in the pipeline for the company which will be manufactured and operated in the UK and US, as well as the European Union.

Multiple job postings recently added to LinkedIn by NIO’s vice president suggest that the Chinese automaker’s expansion into the US could be coming sooner rather than later. NIO has recently shared plans to expand to 25 different countries and regions by 2025.

This holiday season, New Yorkers will be able to visit friends and loved ones around the city in a new fleet of bright yellow Mach-E taxis, provided by EV fleet startup Gravity, Inc. The Mustang Mach-E’s were customized with monitors and panoramic roofs for NYC passengers along with AI for driver safety. The fleet represents a new electrified generation of the Big Apple’s iconic yellow taxis.

DC Fast Charging hardware and software manufacturer Tritium has announced a strategic partnership with Aqua superPower, the first fast charging network developed specifically for marine EVs. Together, the companies plan to expand electric boat charging on waterways around the world.

Goodyear Tire has introduced the new ElectricDrive GT, the company’s first replacement tire in North America specifically designed for EVs – more specifically, the Tesla Model Y to start. Goodyear’s ElectricDrive GT is an ultra-high performance, all-season tire tuned to last long and provide the quiet ride synonymous with EV driving.

Nikola Corporation announced it has reached a settlement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), putting a bookend to the government agency’s fraud investigation that began in 2020.

During its annual NIO Day event held in Suzhou, China this year, NIO has unveiled its new smart, mid-sized sedan, the ET5. With over 1,000 km CLTC range and pricing below $41,000 with the battery swap version, it could be a serious Tesla competitor in China. Additionally, we got updates on the deliveries and new features on the ET7, and NIO’s plans for global expansion

Next week, Audi will open what it is calling “world’s first” charging hub concept in Nuremberg, Germany, complete with reservation options and a lounge area. Audi’s pilot project is intended to test charging solutions for the impending demand for EV infrastructure, particularly in urban areas where drivers might not have access to charging at home.

Following the partnership announced earlier this year, Arrival has now shared a first look at its Car EV, designed specifically for rideshare drivers with Uber’s help. The Arrival Car features a hood to rear panoramic roof, foldable front seat, and passenger legroom that the automaker claims is greater than a Rolls Royce.

Ford Motor Company has just announced a new holistic charging system for electrified fleets called Ford Pro Charging. As the world and, more specifically, commercial fleets transition to electric vehicles, Ford Pro Charging will soon provide both a software and hardware infrastructure to support charging and energy management.
