Germany finally passes Norway, a nation 1/16th their size, in EV sales

Germany has taken the lead over Norway in annual EV sales for the first time, edging out Norway for total sales since the start of this year, as reported by Bloomberg. Currently, Germany’s 2019 total is 57,533 EVs, while Norway has sold 56,893.

This would be good news for Germany — if it weren’t so embarrassing for them and the rest of Europe.  Norway is a tiny country with a population of 5.3 million, where the main industry is oil, and where the whole country is cold. Germany’s population is roughly 16 times larger than Norway’s. And yet, Norway has still had higher EV sales than every country in Europe until now.

Electric cars reach new 52% market share record in Norway thanks to Tesla’s record deliveries

As we anticipated with Tesla breaking its monthly delivery record in Norway halfway through December, the new electric vehicles contributed to electric car market share reaching a new 52 percent record in the country last month.

It means that if a passenger car is sold in Norway today, it’s more likely going to be a plug-in electric (BEV or PHEV) than a gas-powered vehicle.

Understanding Norway’s new proposed ‘Tesla tax’ on electric cars

We reported earlier this week that Norway’s government is proposing a new electric vehicle tax that is being dubbed the ‘Tesla Tax’ since it affects heavier electric cars.

Local EV buyers are bracing for impact and Tesla naysayers are already calling it the end of the company’s success in the important market, but it’s not as simple.

Tesla could get hit by a new tax proposed by EV-friendly Norway

Norway’s electric vehicle incentives have made the country the number one market for EV adoption per capita with no close second.

It has been especially good to Tesla and became the automaker’s third biggest market despite its relatively small population size.

In an interesting turn, Norway is now suggesting a new tax that could potentially affect Tesla in the country.
