Where they can get away with it, certain legacy carmakers are still perfectly content to be dragged, kicking and screaming, toward electrification. Curiously though, there are instances in which the self-same car companies that make little effort in their home country can’t resist the revenues on offer in nations with significant EV sales. Numerous of them have fought for Norwegian consumers in recent years, and even electric vehicle laggards, Toyota, now have a pure electric vehicle for the Chinese market, despite aggressively campaigning against “plugging in” in Europe.

But considering GM’s past (and present) anti-EV efforts, can we trust that is the direction they are heading and with appropriate speed?

General Motors is following an orderly people-first process to reopening its factories. The company is working with its union and local health officials. Earlier this week, GM told employees “significant planning is under way to safely restart production” of vehicles.
Ken Morris, GM’s vice-president for electric and autonomous vehicles, today provided an update on the company’s progress with electric vehicles throughout the lockdown period. “We’re absolutely on time,” said Morris. “We haven’t lost a beat.”
In November, Ken Morris, who has been with GM for 31 years, was named vice-president for electric and autonomous vehicles. It’s hard to imagine how he could be more gung-ho on EVs. In interviews over the past few months, he repeatedly states that GM (and the world) will soon hit an inflection point for electric propulsion. He told Automobile magazine last week that GM will be all-electric “sooner than people would think.”
GM is going all out to push the Chevy Bolt EV electric car at the end of the quarter with a discount of up to $10,000, leases for just $199 a month, and more.

There is a ripple effect from Ford establishing its EV headquarters in Detroit’s Corktown, and GM dedicating its Detroit-Hamtramck plant for electric vehicles. America’s troubled automotive capital is taking on new importance as a center for EV engineering. That’s paying off in unexpected ways.

GM’s display of 10 new EVs yesterday gave journalists practically no time to study specific design features. No photos were allowed. But the overall impression of the vehicle lineup was unmistakable. Those electric vehicles – most notably the ones badged as GMC Hummer and Cadillac – were big and badass.
Hi folks, I’m currently flying back from Detroit after the electric car event. We did a bunch of posts about the EV news coming out of the event, but there are tons of nuances to be covered. I had a firsthand look at a dozen unreleased electric vehicles from GM, but we couldn’t take any pictures or videos. GM said they would provide images and video afterward, but nothing they provided really shows off these vehicles and technology in a way that we saw in person.
I’m doing an AMA on YouTube later tonight at 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. PT). Put your questions below or on YouTube, and I will do my best to answer them.
