XPeng’s G9 arrives as first unmodified, mass-produced EV to qualify for autonomous robotaxi testing

Just over a month after officially launching its G9 SUV in China, XPeng Motors has announced its latest EV has received a permit for autonomous driving tests on public roads. According to the Chinese automaker, the G9 is the first unmodified, mass-produced commercial vehicle to qualify for such tests and is on its way to implementing an XPeng robotaxi network in the future.

EU and US discussing an exemption that would include EVs from European members in US tax credits

The European Union has asked the United States to include EVs, batteries, and other sustainable products sold on US soil in federal tax credits, similar to benefits it currently offers its North American neighbors. CATL expands deal with Vinfast to provide skateboard chassis for EVs and ‘enhance global footprint’

Global battery giant CATL and Vietnamese EV automaker Vinfast announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding to expand upon their current battery supply agreement. EU officially inks complete ban on new combustion vehicles from 2035 onward

Following over five years of debate and a steadfast proposal introduced last year, the EU has agreed upon its first terms under a “Fit for 55” package to significantly reduce carbon emissions in Europe and achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The EU agreement increases required cuts to carbon emissions by 2030 and issues a complete ban on new combustion cars and vans from 2035 onward.

Latest Rivian software update includes ‘Kneel Mode’ for easier entry and exit by lowering EV’s height

Rivian has begun rolling out over-the-air software update 2022.39.03 to both its R1T pickup and R1S SUV. In addition to updates to its EV’s user interfaces and Gear Guard security system, Rivian has put a spotlight on its new “Kneel Mode,” which can lower the EV’s height down to about ten inches, making it easier for drivers and their passengers to get in and out of the vehicle. You can see the new mode in action in the video below.

We toured Wallbox’s new Texas facility and demoed its 400 kW DCFC that can deliver 100 miles in 5 minutes

EV charging equipment specialist Wallbox opened its new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Arlington, Texas, today where we were fortunate enough to be one of the first to take a tour. This new 130,000-square-foot factory is Wallbox’s first manufacturing footprint in North America, and will produce all of its US EV chargers. Wallbox also demonstrated one of the chargers that will be built in Texas – the new Hypernova 400 kW DC fast charger, which can add up to 100 miles of range in just five minutes.

General Motors (GM) reports a record $41.9 billion in Q3 2022 revenue and reaffirms earnings guidance

Magna will invest $500 million to expand EV facilities and bring over 1,500 new jobs to Michigan

Ford CEO shares F-150 Lightning’s official 0-60 mph under 4-seconds, faster than originally promised

In recent Ford fashion (when it comes to EVs at least), the American automaker has once again underpromised and overdelivered. Its latest cheeky announcement came in the form of a tweet from Ford CEO Jim Farley, who just admitted the F-150 Lightning with an extended-range battery can travel 0-60 mph in under four seconds. A huge improvement from previously shared acceleration times and a hint that Ford may have originally been conservative about its pickup’s performance.

Rivian (RIVN) halts powered tonneau cover production to redesign it (U: statement)

In a recent letter to current reservation holders of the R1T, Rivian has said it will halt the production and installation of the powered tonneau cover on all future deliveries. Those reservation holders can now choose between a manual tonneau cover or no cover at all while Rivian “upgrades” the powered version. Here are the details.

GMC introduces 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 with 400 mile range and crab walk, starting at $107k

Nearly a year after first teasing plans for a Sierra EV, GMC has officially unveiled the all-electric pickup and opened reservations for the Denali Edition 1 trim to begin. The all-electric 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali will join the Hummer EV pickup and SUV as the third electric truck model in the GMC family. Mullen Automotive acquires ELMS inventory, manufacturing plant, and IP in all-cash purchase

Mullen received court approval last week to acquire ELMS’s Indiana manufacturing facility, its inventory of EVs, and all its intellectual property.

Biden White House to award $2.8B to bolster EV battery and mineral production in the US

Later today, the Biden administration is expected to announce $2.8 billion that will be awarded in grants around the US in support of EV battery manufacturing and mineral production domestically.
