Audi’s attempt to block NIO from using the names ES8 and ES6 in Europe just took a turn after the European Union Intellectual Property Office shot down the German automaker’s request.

During Nio day 2022, the Chinese EV marker revealed two flagship SUVs, a refresh of the ES8 and the EC7 coupe SUV, which Nio claims features market-leading aerodynamics, a possible Audi e-tron rival.

EV automaker NIO has just announced that its annual “NIO Day” 2021 event will be held at the Olympic Sports Center in Suzhou, west of Shanghai on December 18. NIO Day 2020 was held in early January of this year, and the event is usually when the automaker introduces new models. That trend should continue this year as the automaker is expected to reveal at least two new models and possibly an entirely new vehicle brand. Here’s what we know so far.

NIO recently debuted its upcoming ET7 sedan in Germany, representing the EV’s European debut. While the Chinese automaker continues to roll out its electric ES8 SUV in Norway this month, we now know plans to expand further into Europe next year, beginning with Germany.

NIO began offering test drives yesterday to consumers in Norway of its ES8 electric SUV, ahead of deliveries to the Scandinavian country later this year. With early test drive reservations already locked up, Norwegians can now experience NIO’s flagship electric SUV on off-road terrain and on an airport tarmac.

NIO has introduced a new test on its app required for all drivers before unlocking the ability to use Navigate on Pilot (NOP), the company’s assisted driving feature. The required testing comes in the wake of a fatal crash earlier this month that involved a man driving his NIO ES8 using NOP in Southeast China.

A recent job post by Chinese automaker NIO offers a potential hint that the company plans to expand its sales presence in the EU to Germany next. While NIO is currently in the process of shipping superchargers and battery swap stations to Norway as the first stop on its European tour, expanding to Germany makes sense for several reasons.

NIO’s expansion overseas has officially begun as superchargers and swap stations have begun their journey to Norway and are expected to arrive next month. According to the Chinese automaker, home chargers and superchargers will be officially available to Norwegian customers beginning in September, while the first rollout of four battery swap stations will become available before year’s end.

Chinese EV automaker NIO announced it has received European Whole Vehicle Type Approval (EWVTA) for its flagship SUV, the ES8. This essential certification will allow for mass production of the NIO ES8, as well as license plate registration for all countries in the EU.
