Tesla releases second version of its beta v7.0 software update with Autopilot [Updated]

Last month we wrote a first look at Tesla’s much-anticipated v7.0 software update with new ‘Autopilot’ features expected to be released later this year. Today we learn that Tesla released the second version of its beta v7.0 update to early access testers.

For previous releases, Tesla was able to update the beta fairly quickly for a wide-release just weeks after the original release to testers, but v7.0 being highly sensitive safety-wise, the beta testing process is taking longer than usual.

Energy Department awards $55 million to advance fuel efficiency and electric vehicle technologies

As part of the Obama Administration’s strategy to increase energy productivity, reduce America’s reliance on foreign oil and cut harmful emissions, the Department of Energy awarded $55 million to advance fuel efficiency and electric vehicle technologies through 24 projects.

The program is directly aiming at making electric vehicles as affordable to own as a gas-powered vehicles by 2022.

The money awarded went to projects ranging from material science on battery technologies to systems for making components lighter in order to increase efficiency of both battery-powered and gas-powered vehicles.

Tesla increased by 10 miles the estimated EPA-rated range of the Signature Model X to 250 miles

Ahead of the Model X launch set for September 29th, Tesla is still tuning the options available for the configuration of its all-electric SUV.  Yesterday we wrote about how Tesla will offer hitch accessories directly at the purchase of the Model X in order to get around the limitations of the vehicle’s ‘Falcon Wing’ doors. Today we learn, through the same online design studio for early reservation holders, that Tesla increased by 10 miles the estimated EPA-rated range of the Signature Model X to 250 miles.

Jefferies predicts Tesla will achieve a 50%+ reduction in battery cost by 2020

In a new note issued today, Jefferies analyst Dan Dolev increased his price target on Tesla Motors to $365 following a new analysis on the company’s battery business. When Tesla first announced its “Gigafactory“, it forecasted a ~30% reduction in battery cost through economy of scale and improved chemistry, but since then Tesla executives revealed that 30% might have been conservative and Jefferies seems to agree.

Tesla to offer hitch accessories at Model X purchase to get around ‘Falcon Wing’ door limitations

Ahead of the Model X launch at the end of the month, Tesla is still tuning the options available for the configuration of its all-electric SUV.  A roof-rack, which is popular for skiers and cyclists, isn’t an option for the Model X due to the vehicle’s Falcon Wing’ doors. We now learn through the online design studio, which is accessible to a select few reservation holders, that Tesla will be offering hitch accessories directly at the purchase of the Model X in order to get around the limitations.

Chinese startup NextEV raised about half of the $1 billion it seeks ahead of launching its electric vehicle lineup according to Bloomberg. Last month we wrote about NextEV coming out of stealth to reveal its plan to “disrupt” the electric vehicle market with yet another electric supercar and today we learn that the company is extremely well-funded by big-name VC firms: Sequoia Capital and Joy Capital.

Audi: the e-tron quattro will not be a compliance car

During an interview at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi of America President Scott Keogh confirmed that the company doesn’t plan to make the e-tron quattro a “compliance car”, but instead he sees a global market for the all-electric SUV.

“Our number one thing is not to build a compliance car but to build a cool, desirable car, because that’s what’s going to help our brand and our customers are going to like it,” Keogh said.

Thunder Power introduces new electric vehicles with a massive 125 kWh battery pack [picture gallery]

Thunder Power unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show today two new electric vehicles equipped with a massive 125 kWh battery pack.

Thunder Power is a Taiwan-based power-tool maker established in 1987, which recently changed its focus to electric vehicles. Its first entries are a 4-door sedan (picture above), the Thunder Power Sedan, and a sport car, the Thunder Power Race (picture below).

Porsche unveils new electric car concept: Mission E, 600 hp, 500 km – 310miles range and 15 min charging

Ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show starting this week, Porsche introduced a new all-electric concept: the Mission E. The four-seat sport car is a first for the luxury car brand. The company is aiming for high performance with 440 kW output, 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and over 310 miles of range (500 km).

Jaguar showcases 3 new platforms for electric vehicles and hybrids

Jaguar Land Rover is showcasing 3 new vehicle platforms for the Concept_e research at the CENEX Low Carbon Vehicle event which runs this week in the UK. The Concept_e platforms are coming out of a $25 million advanced powertrain research program partly backed by the UK government.

The concept platforms are intended for future generations vehicles and the company currently doesn’t have any plan to implement them in its lineup.

Russian government will force gas stations to offer electric vehicle charging by the end of 2016

In an effort to stimulate the electric vehicle market in Russia, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree requiring the owners of gas stations to install charging equipment for electric cars at their gas stations by Nov. 1, 2016 according to the Moscow Times. The requirement could very well be the most drastic government action to encourage electric vehicle infrastructure in any country.

San Antonio denied Tesla’s plan for a showroom over water contamination concerns

Last month Tesla’s plan for a showroom and service center in San Antonio was denied approval by the city zoning commission over concerns that Tesla’s battery packs could potentially contaminate the local water supply. The commission denied the proposal despite the recommendation of San Antonio Water System (SAWS) which approved Tesla’s project.

The project was up for another vote last week, but Tesla pulled the proposal to work on some the details ahead of more concerns leading up to the vote…

Mercedes is planning a new 250 to 310 miles electric vehicle says Daimler’s Chief of R&D

In an interview with German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, Daimler’s chief of research and development Thomas Weber confirmed the company is currently working on a next generation electric vehicle with a range of “400 to 500 km” (250 to 310 miles).

Daimler already sells a few electric vehicles, like EV versions of the Smart or the Mercedes B class, but the automaker as yet to build a fully electric vehicle from the ground up. It’s not entirely clear from Weber’s comments if the concept will be a completely new electric platform, but it sounds more likely than not…

Peugeot announces a new EV concept with a potential range of 280 miles: the FRACTAL

France-based automaker Peugeot announced a new electric vehicle concept: the Fractal. The vehicle is only an early concept and the specifications should be taken with a grain of salt. Indianapolis’ all-electric car sharing program, BlueIndy, officially launches today

Today Indianapolis is officially launching BlueIndy, its all-electric car sharing program. The program has been in the work for quite sometime now, but today 25 stations hosting up to 5 cars each are up-and-running.

BlueIndy is modeled after the car sharing programs, like Autolib in Paris, operated by the Bolloré Group in Europe and it uses the same car, the Bluecar, manufactured in partnership between the France-based Bolloré Group and the Italian automotive company Cecomp.

India’s Prime Minister plans a visit at Tesla’s headquarters

According to the Times of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning a visit at Tesla’s headquarters during a tour in California next month. Tesla isn’t currently operating in India, but the visit might be a step toward changing that.

In the past, company executives have been on record saying that they plan on starting a dialogue with the Indian government to rationalise import duty on electric cars, which are ridiculously high in the country.

Nissan LEAF US sales down 56% ahead of next generation release

Nissan released its monthly US sale reports today and the company reported a 56% decrease in LEAF sales versus August last year. The decrease is a clear example of the Osborne effect, which refers to the unintended consequences of the release of information about an upcoming product can have on a current product. In this case, the release of information on the 2016 LEAF is having a significant effect on the sales of the 2015 LEAF.

Tesla Motors and car dealerships clash again – this time over Tesla’s new referral program

Last month Tesla announced a new referral program for Model S owners that will run as an experiment through October. If you refer the Model S to a friend, your friend will get $1,000 off the price of his new car and Tesla will credit you $1,000 for your referral, which you can apply to any purchase with the company, like a new car, service center visit or accessories.

Now dealership are pushing back against Tesla’s program. California’s main dealership lobbying group sent a letter to the director of the California Department of Motor Vehicles, Jean Shiomoto, to ask his agency to crackdown on the referral program.
