Audi e-tron

The Audi e-tron was first released in the middle of 2019. Electrek got an early look at it in 2018. Fred Lambert had positive things to say about his first ride experience. While some of the features weren’t on par with other electric vehicles, Audi set out to build a great SUV first and an electric vehicle second.

Audi-e-tron Range

As we learned toward the end of 2019, Audi-e-tron was upgraded through the additional range on a single charge.

When launching the e-tron Sportback last week, Audi credited the improved efficiency mainly to the better aerodynamics.

However, we learned that the automaker actually made some software and hardware improvements to help efficiency and that those improvements could make it to the e-tron SUV.

Today, Audi confirmed it with new upgrades to the e-tron resulting in an extra 25km (15.5 miles) of WLTP range for both versions of the vehicle (Audi e-tron 50 and 55).

Audi explained how they were able to achieve additional range.

Thanks to a new type of wheel brake, the developers have achieved further reductions in what is known as residual brake torque. This refers to losses that occur as a result of the proximity of the brake calipers to the brake discs. The drive system has also become more efficient. In normal driving, the motor on the rear axle provides propulsion as standard. Now, thanks to a number of optimizations, the front electric motor is almost entirely disengaged and disconnected from the electricity supply. Only when the driver requests more power do both motors spring into action. Running without power or drag losses, the major advantage of the asynchronous motor concept, is even more effective as a result. In addition, the usable range of the high-voltage battery has increased.

The Audi e-tron 55 quattro can drive for up to  270.9 miles on a full charge.

Audi e-tron Price

Audi-e-tron starts at $74,000, but there are plenty of discounts and incentives to be found if you know where to look. We’ve done the hard work of calling around to various dealerships to find what they are offering. Find the lowest purchase and lease price here on Electrek.

There are models as low as $55,000 depending on the country you’re in.

In Norway, the Audi e-tron 50 price starts at ~$55,000. Earlier this month, Audi unveiled the e-tron 50, a new variant of the electric SUV with a smaller 71 kWh battery pack. The current version of the e-tron, called e-tron 55, comes with a 95 kWh battery pack for a 204-mile EPA-rated range. With the smaller battery pack, the e-tron 50 has a shorter range.

According to the company, the new variant will get 186 miles (299 km) of range compared to 248 miles (399 km) for the version with the 95 kWh pack based on the WLTP standard

Audi e-tron Features

Some of the unique features of the car are a quick charge of 54 miles on a 10-minute charge. For many people’s day-to-day needs, this range would be enough for your drive to work and even a few errands afterward.

It’s the first all-electric passenger vehicle to hit the market with a charging rate of up to 150 kW.

Audi e-tron achieves 155 kW fast-charge rate with impressive full cycle

Despite being a little late to market due to “software issues”, Audi’s e-tron electric SUV is likely going to be the passenger electric vehicle with the fastest charge rate on the market – at least for the first half of 2019.

It has now been spotted charging at 155 kW and it maintained a high charge rate for an impressive part of the session.

Norway reportedly has over 30,000 electric vehicle pre-orders, Tesla Model 3 and Audi e-tron to make huge impact

Norway keeps impressing the world with its fast pace electric vehicle adoption, but what is most impressing is that they are doing it with relatively few options.

Automakers are now turning to the market to introduce new EVs early with pre-orders. The country now has reportedly over 30,000 electric vehicles on pre-orders.

First look at the Audi e-tron pricing, options, and online configurator

One of the most disappointing thing about the launch of the e-tron yesterday was that Audi is not making it immediately available despite announcing the start of production earlier this month.

Instead, Audi is following Tesla with the reservation model that requires a $1,000 refundable deposit.

With a reservation, you at least get to see all the options and pricing information in the online configurator.

Audi’s worker union demands EVs be built at the company’s main factory

Audi’s top labor representative Peter Mosch demanded today that Audi build an upcoming all-electric model in their main plant in Ingolstadt, Germany, reasoning that employees of the main factory should not be left out as the industry moves towards electric vehicles. The comments were made in a speech to 7,000 workers at Audi’s 43,000-employee Ingolstadt plant.

Audi has previously stated that they plan to locate production of their all-electric models in a smaller 16,000-employee plant in Neckarsulm, where the company currently makes its higher-end vehicles. Planned electric models include the quattro e-tron SUV, a sportscar and a compact car, the latter two of which are still yet to be unveiled.

Audi’s all-electric e-tron supercar is dead, they couldn’t sell a $1 million Audi R8

audi_e-tron_edit1

Audi confirmed this week that they are pulling the plug on their all-electric e-tron supercar, which is basically a battery-powered version of the Audi R8. If you haven’t heard of the vehicle program despite being launched back in 2009, that’s because Audi ended delivering fewer than 100 units over the last 2 years since starting series production.

The company was reportedly working on a new generation, but they confirmed to Car and Driver yesterday that the program is dead and they are in “the process of delivering the last few units before production stops for good.”

Audi: the e-tron quattro will not be a compliance car

During an interview at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi of America President Scott Keogh confirmed that the company doesn’t plan to make the e-tron quattro a “compliance car”, but instead he sees a global market for the all-electric SUV.

“Our number one thing is not to build a compliance car but to build a cool, desirable car, because that’s what’s going to help our brand and our customers are going to like it,” Keogh said.
