The low-cost 80 mph (130 km/h) SONDORS Metacycle may be one of the most highly anticipated electric motorcycles of the year, but that huge spotlight also shines a light on controversies surrounding its delayed production.

The last time we covered Max Biaggi and his Voxman Wattman electric motorcycle, he had just set a new land speed record for electric motorcycles at 254 mph (408 km/h). But apparently even that wasn’t fast enough for Biaggi.

Leading electric scooter manufacturer NIU has taken to the EICMA 2021 Milan Motorcycle Show to showcase several new models of electric two-wheelers, including some big new firsts for the company.

Among the new models on display today at the show are the new MQi GT EVO, RQi Sport, NQi GTS, YQi, and BQi KQi.

The $5,000 SONDORS Metacycle electric motorcycle received a huge response upon its unveiling, but many reservation holders have been left scratching their heads and looking at an empty space in their garage while they await a delayed delivery. Now we’re getting updated specifics on exactly when SONDORS expects to deliver the first Metacycles to eager riders.

Kawasaki may not be leading the pack when it comes to electric motorcycle innovation, but recent plans at least indicate that the company won’t be the last major motorcycle manufacturer to embrace the future of electric transportation.

The SONDORS Metacycle electric motorcycle’s reservation window had previously closed for new pre-orders. But today the company re-opened reservations while maintaining the original promotional price of $5,000.

Swedish electric motorcycle company CAKE is unveiling its new CAKE :work line of electric motorcycles today at the EICMA Milan Motorcycle Show. The :work bikes feature a wide range of accessory mounts that can be used for everything from mounting cargo boxes to miter saws, and their batteries can even be used for providing off-grid power for tools and devices.

Opibus now looks to use this investment money to continue to scale its operations in electric motorcycle and bus manufacturing in Africa.

I recently had the chance to borrow a Zero SR/S electric motorcycle for several days to test out how well the company’s flagship model rides. The result? I’m going to go broke if I keep doing this stuff, because now I really want one in my garage.

The $5,000 SONDORS Metacycle looks like one of the best bets right now for a low-cost and highway-capable electric motorcycle in the US. But high demand for the bike means new reservation holders may have to wait nearly a year for their bikes.

And anyone still on the fence could be seeing prices rise soon too.
