Apple, GM, Uber, Lyft, Hyperloop & others join U.S. Department of Transportation Automation Committee that will oversee self-driving vehicles

The U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) announced today that it’s forming a new Automation Committee to oversee self-driving transportation policy. The committee will be co-chaired by GM CEO Mary Barra and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. Several top executives from most companies developing autonomous driving technology are on the new committee, although Tesla is notably not currently listed as a member. 

According to the department’s press release, the newly formed committee will have its first meeting later this month on January 16 and the focus of the group will be to address “the development and deployment of automated vehicles, and determining the needs of the Department as it continues with its relevant research, policy, and regulations.”

Intel acquires 15% of HERE to collaborate on mapping tech for autonomous vehicles

Intel has announced it will acquire 15% of mapping company HERE in an effort that will see the two companies collaborate on autonomous vehicle tech, machine learning, and more.

A press release from Intel notes the partnership will focus on development of autonomous vehicle technology it describes as “a highly scalable proof-of-concept architecture that supports real-time updates of high-definition (HD) maps for highly and fully automated driving.” It also said the two companies will collaborate on opportunities in IoT and machine learning related technology.

Hyundai announces Google Assistant/Home integration, incl. ability to start & stop charging IONIQ

Hyundai, as part of its presence this year at CES in Las Vegas, will be showing off integration between its Blue Link in-dash system and Google’s Assistant platform. The collaboration means that drivers of vehicles equipped with Hyundai’s Blue Link system will be able to control their vehicle using voice commands via Google Home and presumably other products that tap into the virtual assistant platform. That includes the ability to start and top charging for Hyundai’s electric vehicles…

Apple Maps now lists ChargePoint EV stations, links to initiate charging & complete payment

Apple has slowly been adding more electric charging station listings to Apple Maps since the release of iOS 10, and today the world’s largest EV charging network, ChargePoint, officially confirmed integration.

The official integration not only means that ChargePoint’s network of charging stations will now be visible as EV Charger badges within Apple Maps, allowing users to tap through to get more info on the station, but it also means that users can initiate charging and complete payment from a link to the ChargePoint app in Apple Maps  (Apple Pay included).
