The U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) announced today that it’s forming a new Automation Committee to oversee self-driving transportation policy. The committee will be co-chaired by GM CEO Mary Barra and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. Several top executives from most companies developing autonomous driving technology are on the new committee, although Tesla is notably not currently listed as a member. 

According to the department’s press release, the newly formed committee will have its first meeting later this month on January 16 and the focus of the group will be to address “the development and deployment of automated vehicles, and determining the needs of the Department as it continues with its relevant research, policy, and regulations.”

Intel has announced it will acquire 15% of mapping company HERE in an effort that will see the two companies collaborate on autonomous vehicle tech, machine learning, and more.

A press release from Intel notes the partnership will focus on development of autonomous vehicle technology it describes as “a highly scalable proof-of-concept architecture that supports real-time updates of high-definition (HD) maps for highly and fully automated driving.” It also said the two companies will collaborate on opportunities in IoT and machine learning related technology.
