But not many Europeans (and practically no Americans) have ever heard of it, much less trust it as a reliable brand. But as the EV giant makes inroads outside of China, it is looking to change that, the old-school way, dealer by dealer.

BYD inks preliminary land purchase in Hungary for plant that will build EVs for Europe

Two months after announcing it had selected Hungary as the desired location of its first passenger EV production facility in Europe, Build Your Dreams (BYD) has completed a preliminary sales agreement for the Hungarian land those facilities should eventually sit atop. It should come as no surprise at this point that BYD is looking to get European EV production up and running quickly and is now moving one step closer.

Fresh off earning the crown as the best-selling brand in China, BYD has (briefly) introduced a new compact SUV to its Yuan family of EVs – one of the larger contributors to its overall sales last year. From what we’ve seen so far, the Yuan Up looks small but mighty, touting some of BYD’s best tech – all at an expected starting price that is sure to entice consumers.

China’s BYD breaks record sales of 3 million EVs in 2023

It was a huge year for profits at Chinese auto behemoth BYD. In 2023, the company sold 1.6 million fully battery-electric vehicles, coming close to Tesla’s projected goal of 1.8 million vehicles. Adding up sales for all so-called new energy vehicles, including battery-only vehicles and plug-in hybrids, BYD sold a whooping 3 million vehicles in 2023.
