China files lawsuit with World Trade Organization against US, citing ‘discriminatory policies’ for EVs in the IRA

China has filed a formal complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), claiming its subsidy policies discriminate against foreign automakers and disrupt the global goal of expediting EV adoption while distorting fair competition. A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce spoke to reporters and shared the details behind the filing.

The new year rolled out a new plan where EV shoppers could get on-the-spot tax rebates when purchasing a new electric vehicle, with auto dealers then handling the paperwork and waiting to get reimbursed by the government. The US government says it has already paid out $135 million to auto dealers that signed up for the program so far this year.

New year, new rules: As of January 1, things are about to get a little easier when it comes to getting your federal tax credit for buying an electric vehicle. Now the rebate – which is up to $7,500 for new EVs that qualify and up to $4,000 for used EVs that qualify – is available immediately when you purchase your car, rather than needing to wait potentially months to file a claim with your tax return. And auto dealers are signing up in droves with the IRS.
