SolarCity leaves Nevada and 2,000 local workers after PUC gives Warren Buffet’s NV Energy a monopoly on solar

green energy jobs

solarcity_installers

SolarCity announced yesterday that it will cease sales and installations in Nevada after the state’s Public Utilities Commission approved a 75% reduction of the price electric utilities pay for electricity generated from rooftop solar. The new rule makes net-metering uneconomical and “effectively shut down” the homeowner and 3rd party-owned rooftop solar industry in Nevada, giving a monopoly to utility-owned systems.

Lawmakers reportedly reached a deal on 5 years extension of 30% tax credits for solar energy

solarcity_copper_ridge_schoolU.S. Democrats recently said they were open to a lift of the four-decade-old ban on crude oil exports, if Republicans would allow the bill to include an extension of the federal tax credit for solar installations, which is currently set to decrease from 30% to 10% in 2017.

Reports from earlier this week suggested that Democrats were looking for a 10-year extension, but today we learn that both parties have agreed to a 5-year extension.

SolarCity CEO says the US solar industry could lose 100,000 jobs if the federal tax credit is not renewed

green energy jobs

solarcity_installersSeveral solar companies saw double digits stock price increases on Monday. The surge can be partly attributed to the Paris agreement to curb greenhouse gas emissions, but it was mainly due to reports of negotiation for the renewal of the federal tax credit for solar energy.

Democrats are said to be willing to agree to a lift on the 40-year ban on US crude oil exports, if the bill includes a long-term extension of the wind and solar tax credits. The deal isn’t done, but as the industry is getting closer to the phasing out of the tax credits, which are set to fall from 30% to 10% in 2017, the industry is warning politicians about the impact of inaction.

Australia’s largest electric utility starts selling the Tesla Powerwall

models-powerwallAustralia has the world’s highest per capita penetration of rooftop solar technology with 15% of households using solar for a total of 1.5 million households across the country. Electricity prices, which are among the highest in the world, and abundant sunlight contribute to making Australia an excellent market for solar energy and emerging home energy storage products.

Now those households will be able to combine their solar installations with Tesla’s home battery pack: the Powerwall. Origin, the largest electric utility in Australia, announced that it started to officially offer the Powerwall to its customers today.

‘Moulin Eiffel’ Idea: Turn the Eiffel Tower into the world’s most famous and beautiful green energy source

Site default logo image

paris-wind-turbine-rendering

With the Paris climate talks taking place this week, I thought it fitting to share an idea I came up with a few years ago while visiting the French capital. ‘Moulin Eiffel’ is taking the 130-year old Eiffel Tower, the iconic symbol of Paris, and outfitting it with a vertical axis wind turbine. The idea is that the tower seen around the whole world would genuinely (not BS) become energy neutral and a symbol for a sustainable energy future.

I had originally considered the option of placing a traditional “windmill” on top of the tower like you increasingly see in farms around the world, but with all of the equipment located up there already plus factoring changing wind patterns and the all important aesthetics, the vertical model works the best. This is how:

Google makes its largest ever purchase of renewable energy to power its data centers

wind

Google has announced its largest ever purchase of renewable energy to power data centers across the U.S., Sweden and Chile, reports The Washington Post. The new projects, mostly wind-powered, add a massive 842 megawatts of green energy, which Google claims is the largest investment ever by anyone other than a power company.

The investment brings Google’s total renewable energy capacity to 2 gigawatts, which is equivalent to the total energy output of the Hoover Dam. Google has pledged to power its entire operations from green energy by 2025, and Re/code reports it was 37% of the way there prior to this deal. That suggests this deal ought to take the company to around 60%.

There is a little small-print, however …

SunEdison to layoff 10% of its workforce as investors question its strategy

SunEdison-water-pumpsAccording to a new report from GTM on Sunday, SunEdison sent out an internal memo last Friday to announce an important restructuring process which will include laying-off about 10% of the company’s workforce. The restructuring comes amid investor concerns about the company’s strategy which has been “all over the place” lately. Most notably, the company’s acquisition of the residential solar installer Vivint for $2.2 billion earlier this summer.

The decision to buy a residential solar provider was out of SunEdison’s core business, which mostly consist of developing utility-scale solar projects. Now the company might have to sell some of these projects in order to get rid of mounting debts (~$10 billion).
