Tesla Powerwall sees a ’30 times’ increase in demand after Australia’s blackouts

We previously reported that Tesla Powerwall installation had picked up in Australia in recent months and when massive blackouts started to plague South Australia last month, those homeowners were able to keep their lights on. Some of their stories were popular in the country. We shared one about a 73-year-old Tesla Powerwall owner powering through South Australia’s state-wide blackout without even knowing.

In the piece, we suggested that it could lead to more people looking into home battery pack solutions and sure enough, Tesla Energy authorized distributors in Australia are now reporting a ’30 times’ increase in demand for the Tesla Powerwall and other home battery packs.

Energy company subsidizes hundreds of Tesla Powerwalls to create ‘virtual power plant’

The Tesla Powerwall, a home battery pack, can be expensive. It starts at $3,000, but when you add an inverter and the installation, it can go up quickly. Eneco, an energy company and Tesla Energy distributor in the Netherlands, generally sells the device installed for €7,000, but through a new service called ‘CrowdNett’, the company reduced the price to €4,500 euro installed.

Tesla integration of home charging station + energy storage + solar will change everything

Elon Musk has been leaving breadcrumbs about Tesla’s intention to reinvent the entire energy sector from generation of renewable energy with SolarCity to energy storage and consumption with Tesla. It looks like the company’s vision will be unveiled on or around October 28 when Tesla will make its next product announcement:

Musk has one of the best Twitter accounts right now. Even Twitter’s own founder says it. He uses it to answer questions from his fans, correct media perception on his businesses and even to make occasional product announcements. But this Tweet in particular, it might be his most important yet.

Tesla Powerwalls are being delivered in volume in Germany

Tesla Powerwall is slowly starting to trickle down to a few markets, but only slowly since Tesla is reportedly focusing on the next generation product, which should arrive toward the end of the year. CEO Elon Musk expects the bulk of the deliveries will be pushed to late in Q4 2016, but nonetheless, we are starting to see some bulk deliveries of the system.

One of Tesla’s main Powerwall reseller in Germany, an important market for Tesla Energy because of the popularity of solar installations, has recently received a significant order and it is now listing the home battery pack for sale on its website.

Elon Musk made some very interesting comments yesterday about Tesla’s stationary energy storage products: Powerwalls and Powerpacks. The company delivered 25 MWh worth of Tesla Energy products during the first quarter and now that the company released its second quarter results, analysts wanted to know how many they sold during the period, but Tesla didn’t disclose it in its shareholders letter like it did for the previous quarter.

You might remember when we reported on Nick Pfitzer, one of the first Tesla Powerwall customers and the very first in Australia. The Pfitzner family paid $16,000 for a solar installation with the Tesla Powerwall and now 6 months later, they are back in the news with some positive feedback and an electricity bill in hand to prove it.

Tesla’s second generation Powerwall is coming “in a few weeks”, features more compatibility

batteries

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced earlier this year that the company was already working on second generation Powerwall, Tesla’s home battery pack. He made the following comment during an exclusive event for Tesla owners in Paris:

“We are coming up with the version 2 of the Powerwall probably around July or August of this year, which will see further step changes in capabilities.”

Now it looks like the company is on or ahead of schedule with the updated device. A Tesla representative has confirmed some of the improvements featured in the new version and that installation will start “in the next few weeks.”

Enel now reportedly offering $10,000 Tesla Powerwall and solar array package in South Africa

With South Africa’s electricity rates set to increase by 9.4% this year and the country’s unstable grid prone to outages, home energy storage systems are expected to become quite popular in the region. Tesla is aware of the opportunity and opened an office in the country earlier this year to develop the market for its ‘Tesla Energy’ products: the Powerwall and Powerpack.

Now we learn though a new report from Bloomberg that Enel Green Power SpA, the renewable energy unit of Italy’s biggest utility, is offering a “home-power kit”, which includes a Tesla Powerwall, to the South African market.

Tesla begins alerting 1st general US Powerwall customers, installations starting in June

Tesla today began a wider rollout of its 7kWh Powerwall product for customers who are also Tesla vehicle owners across the US. Tesla Energy quietly cancelled the 10kWh Powerwall option with limited cycles we found out today because the “economics didn’t work” just months after it was announced. The 7kWh battery is obviously a lower capacity but it optimized for daily usage cycles which may not be optimal for those looking for a backup solution rather than an off grid application…

Tesla is sending out Powerwall installation surveys to Model S owners

Today Tesla started sending out Powerwall installation surveys to Model S owners who requested the product after its unveiling in May 2015. A week after the launch, Tesla reported over 38,000 requests for the Powerwall, but those weren’t official reservations with deposits.

This latest development will likely be a better representation of the demand since the company is asking for a lot more information about the installation of the home battery pack.

Tesla now offers free Powerwalls through its referral program – the top referrer already sold 88 Model S’s

Three months ago Tesla announced a referral program for Model S owners. By referring someone who ends up buying a Tesla Model S, the owner gets $1,000 credit from Tesla to put toward accessories, service or a car, and the new buyer gets $1,000 off his new Model S. The program is only in a “trial phase” until October 31, but the deadline is also a competition for top referrers.

Today, less than two weeks before the end of the trial, the automaker upped the ante by announcing that those who make 5 referrals will receive a Tesla Powerwall for free…
