Superpedestrian’s self-repairing electric scooter is exactly what Lime and Bird need

superpedestrian electric scooter

Shared electric scooters have taken the world by storm, thanks largely to the massive efforts by companies like Lime and Bird. Such companies have flooded cities around the world with affordable, convenient electric scooters that are solving a critical transportation need.

However, a dirty secret of the industry is that these scooters break down at an alarming rate while constantly being cycled out of circulation and replaced. Many scooters don’t last 3 months on the road, and some are even replaced monthly. That’s not enough time to even recoup their cost, calling into question how sustainable such companies can be if their scooters can’t last long enough to be profitable – not to mention the environmental ramifications. But Superpedestrian, a startup straight out of MIT, has built a solution in the form of a smart and self-repairing industrial-grade electric scooter. Could this be the breakthrough needed to turn shared personal electric vehicles into a fully sustainable transportation alternative?

The Orca Mark I by Singapore-based Voro Motors will go down as one of the weirder little electric vehicles I’ve reviewed. But it’s a good weird, and I was surprised by how much fun this thing is.

This $660 folding electric mountain bike surprised the heck out of me

Electric bicycles come in a wide range of price and quality. From $10,000 super premium electric bicycles to $400 specials, I’ve pretty much ridden the gamut. And while the high-end electric bicycles are nice, I think that budget electric bicycles are perhaps more important because they open the door for first-time e-bike converts.

The latest budget electric bicycle I’ve been riding is the $660 Ancheer folding electric mountain bike. And believe it or not, this bike really surprised me.

Carbo folding ebike: Good, fast, or cheap, pick all 3

When looking for the perfect ebike, there are a lot of things to consider. There’s price, weight, capabilities, performance and something that’s hard to quantify: feel. That’s a combination of factors that is affected by the geometry of the bike, its materials, components and other nuances. I took a ride on the crowd-funded Carbo folding bike this week and I’m not sure I’ve ever felt as comfortable on a folding bike in the city as I did on this extremely light, yet powerful ebike.

Electrek review: The Jetson Bolt electric bicycle is a $399 steal of a deal

jetson bolt ebike

One of the things I love about electric bicycles is the extreme variety of options in the market. From electric cargo bikes to mini e-bikes to $10,000 street e-bikes, there’s a bit of everything on the spectrum.

And like any spectrum, you often find the really interesting stuff on the extreme ends. Cue the Jetson Bolt, an ultra-affordable $399 electric bicycle. This little thing is a surprisingly capable bike, as I found out by riding it around for a few weeks. Read on to see my full review.

Weekend project: How to build your own DIY 40 mph fast electric bicycle

Electric bicycles is a booming industry. It seems like every week we hear about another new model entering the market. Outside of a few exceptions, most electric bicycles fall in the 15-28 mph (25-45 km/h) range. That’s fine for pleasure riding, but it leaves many enthusiasts looking for more speed.

With so many people commuting on electric bicycles, the extra speed of a fast electric bicycle is a nice addition for many, allowing them keep up with traffic. However, there aren’t many commercially available options for fast electric bicycles. That’s why I decided to build my own, with the goal of reaching 40 mph (64 km/h). Read on to see how to build your own DIY fast electric bicycle.

This is why so many electric bicycles are getting funded on Indiegogo

Mid-interview, I suddenly hear babbling noises come over the line.

“Sorry, I’m here. I’m just holding a baby while another one watches cartoons in the background,” Julie Kronstrøm reassured me.

In addition to being a full-time entrepreneur, Julie is a single mother to three kids. That’s certainly a feat by itself, but why am I interviewing her for Electrek?

Because along with her brother Christian Adel Michael, Julie crowdfunded over $21 million selling electric bicycles in two campaigns on Indiegogo, and I want to know how. And why. And… what!?

Review: The Blix Aveny electric bicycle is a Dutch-style bike that looks as good as it rides

Many electric bicycles on the market fall into hybrid or mountain bike categories, with a few nice but expensive examples of electric road bikes as well. But you don’t see too many Dutch-style electric bikes, which makes the Aveny by Blix Bikes stand out among its peers.

I’ve been riding an Aveny around for the last few weeks and have found it to be quite unique compared to other e-bikes – and that’s a good thing!
