During Tesla’s Q4 2018 investor conference call today, CEO Elon Musk stated that Tesla’s much-anticipated pickup truck may be ready for an unveil “this summer.”

Recently Musk stated that Tesla “might” unveil the prototype this coming year, but in today’s call, he seemed slightly more certain that an unveil could happen this summer.  But don’t buy your plane tickets yet, because nothing has actually been announced.

When Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled his product plan last year, he revealed that Tesla had an electric pickup truck in early stages of development. Musk had already been talking about Tesla making an electric pickup for a few years now, but last month he said that the company is only going to reveal it “18 to 24 months” from now.

I think there’s an argument to be made for Tesla to unveil the pickup concept early and to start taking reservations even if production is still 2 to 3 years away.

Tesla’s automotive business is expanding quickly and we are not only talking about the Model 3. The Model 3 program will significantly increase its overall production capacity from roughly 2,000 vehicles per week to ~7,000 vehicles per week by the end of the year if all goes well, but Tesla is also expanding its automotive offering with now 8 vehicle programs at different stages of development.

CEO Elon Musk’s update yesterday gives us a better idea – albeit still vague – of the timeline for those programs.

In my opinion, Tesla is currently by far the most interesting tech company to follow and 2016 was its most exciting year yet. I think the highlights are clear: Model 3 unveil event, introduction of Autopilot 2.0 on all cars, which could enable fully self-driving capability, and finally the unveiling of the solar roof products.

While 2016 was a year of unveilings, 2017 will be a year of execution for Tesla. The company plans to bring all those promising products that it unveiled in 2016 to market, and it also plans to announce a few more.

Tesla has long been a 1-car company. From when it first started production of the Roadster in 2008 to the end of the program and the start of Model S production in 2012 — and finally to last year when Tesla started delivering the Model X. The automaker has only been really producing two different models in volume for the past few months and it’s a significant accomplishment for a new automaker.

Elon Musk revealed his “Master Plan Part 2” for Tesla last week and one of the biggest product to be officially announced, though Tesla officials already had expressed interest in releasing such a vehicle, was a ‘Tesla Pickup Truck’. We don’t have a timeline for the release or the unveiling of the vehicle, but Musk called it “a new kind of pickup”, which of course piqued our curiosity.

For better or worse (probably better), Tesla is not the kind of automaker to release concepts that are not already scheduled for production and therefore, it’s difficult to envision what their new products will look like…
