The question used to be, “When will Gogoro finally expand internationally?” Now the better question has become, “Where will Gogoro go next?” The world leader in battery swapping has just announced that its latest international expansion involves a major partnership with two of China’s largest motorbike companies.

Gogoro has long been a leader in the electric scooter and shared battery market. Now the Taiwan-based company is unveiling a new version of its popular smart scooters known as the VIVA MIX.

Gogoro is one of the global leaders in electric scooter innovation, despite not expanding outside of its native Taiwan. But as slick as its 90 km/h (55 mph) seated electric scooters are, the Gogoro battery swap stations are perhaps one of Gogoro’s most important innovations.
In an announcement made just moments ago, Gogoro unveiled its latest electric scooter: Gogoro VIVA. The smart scooter is designed to operate similarly to Gogoro’s existing scooters, but provide a smaller and more versatile design for urban mobility.
The new scooter also represents one of the final steps in Gogoro’s plans to expand globally.
Gogoro has pretty much set the world standard for how battery swap stations for electric scooters should operate. But that doesn’t mean they’ve stopped innovating. The company just unveiled new, larger battery swap GoStations along with a number of other fascinating announcements. Check them all out below.
Gogoro’s new ‘Powered by Gogoro Network’ was just announced today and already has some big names signed on, including Yamaha, Aeon Motors and PGO.
Yamaha has just debuted their new electric scooter, the Yamaha EC-05. It was formed out of a partnership with Taiwanese electric scooter company Gogoro.
The Taiwanese electric scooter company Gogoro has become an industry leader for both its electric scooters and its fast-swapping batteries. The company currently has multiple electric scooter models positioned for different markets. Today it unveiled its latest generation scooter, the Gogoro 3.
The new Gogoro 3 electric scooter features a total redesign and will leverage the company’s new higher capacity batteries to reach 170 km (105 mi) of range. Those batteries use 2170-format cells supplied by Panasonic – Tesla’s own battery partner.
Without even trying out (not available in US yet) a Gogoro scooter I love the idea. It is a 2-wheeled vehicle that runs on two Lithium battery packs which contain the same Panasonic 18650 batteries that line the bottom of the Tesla Model S and X. While a Model S contains about 7,000 of these to hit about 70-90kWh, the Gogoro’s battery packs are only 1.3kWh each (so around 100+batteries/ea) and can be exchanged in a charging bay. The 2.6kWh, according to Gogoro’s specs will take the good looking scooter about 60 miles at 60mph (0-31 in 4.2secs). While solid specs, that’s not at all what makes Gogoro a gamechanger…
After a successful launch in Asia, Gogoro will now try to introduce its electric “Smartscooters” to Europe starting with Amsterdam in early 2016. You can’t buy the Gogoro’s Smartscooter anywhere because they need to be supported by the company’s network of battery swapping stations (picture above).
