Startup surge and green power give this country a perfect storm for e-motorcycle growth

Brazil, a nation renowned for its vast landscapes and vibrant urban centers, is a fascinating case in the worldwide adoption of electric two-wheelers. Despite a robust two-wheeler market, with sales reaching approximately 1.9 million units in 2024, the adoption of electric motorcycles has been relatively modest. However, recent developments signal a shift towards electrification is gaining momentum and that the country is on the cusp of a significant transformation in its transportation sector.

I went deep into NIU’s electric moped factory in China. Here’s what I saw

On my most recent trip to China, I had the pleasure of visiting NIU’s factory and showroom to see the wide range of electric mopeds, scooters, e-bikes, and more produced by one of the world’s leading smart electric mobility companies. As an electric mobility journalist and enthusiast (and as an owner of my own NIU e-moped since 2020), it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to peek behind the curtain and see where the magic happens.

And now after such an eye-opening visit, I’m even more excited to share that experience with you!

The X Games just banned electric motorcycles for being too good

In yet another new example of an industry defying progress out of preference for “the old ways”, X Games riders and fans are going to be seeing a lot fewer electric motorcycles in the air this year. That’s after a new rule change has quietly banned electric motorcycles from competing. And the reasoning? It’s not fair to the gassers who are trying to keep up.

While it’s hard to cover every single company from the show, we did our best to pull out as many highlights as possible. See them below, or watch the video for an up close and personal experience. Or both!

Husqvarna launches new Pioneer street-legal electric dirt bike

The days of hearing riders ripping up and down suburban streets on loud, illegal dirt bikes may be numbered as more brands introduce compelling electric alternatives. Husqvarna’s new Pioneer electric enduro may not prevent the wheelie gangs, but it will surely do something about the noise and the non-road legal aspect.

PNY’s electric cargo motorcycle is actually hitting the road

Last year at the EICMA Milan Milan Motorcycle Show, I stumbled across a novel-looking vehicle known as the Ponie P2. Described as a van replacement, the 60 mph (100 km/h) electric motorbike sports a huge cargo case below the seat and was prepping for production at the time. Now a year later, I caught up with the company at the same show to learn how the Ponie P2 is now preparing to hit the road.
