Tesla’s second generation Powerwall is coming “in a few weeks”, features more compatibility

batteries

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced earlier this year that the company was already working on second generation Powerwall, Tesla’s home battery pack. He made the following comment during an exclusive event for Tesla owners in Paris:

“We are coming up with the version 2 of the Powerwall probably around July or August of this year, which will see further step changes in capabilities.”

Now it looks like the company is on or ahead of schedule with the updated device. A Tesla representative has confirmed some of the improvements featured in the new version and that installation will start “in the next few weeks.”

With South Africa’s electricity rates set to increase by 9.4% this year and the country’s unstable grid prone to outages, home energy storage systems are expected to become quite popular in the region. Tesla is aware of the opportunity and opened an office in the country earlier this year to develop the market for its ‘Tesla Energy’ products: the Powerwall and Powerpack.

Now we learn though a new report from Bloomberg that Enel Green Power SpA, the renewable energy unit of Italy’s biggest utility, is offering a “home-power kit”, which includes a Tesla Powerwall, to the South African market.

Tesla begins alerting 1st general US Powerwall customers, installations starting in June

Tesla today began a wider rollout of its 7kWh Powerwall product for customers who are also Tesla vehicle owners across the US. Tesla Energy quietly cancelled the 10kWh Powerwall option with limited cycles we found out today because the “economics didn’t work” just months after it was announced. The 7kWh battery is obviously a lower capacity but it optimized for daily usage cycles which may not be optimal for those looking for a backup solution rather than an off grid application…

models-powerwall

Today Tesla started sending out Powerwall installation surveys to Model S owners who requested the product after its unveiling in May 2015. A week after the launch, Tesla reported over 38,000 requests for the Powerwall, but those weren’t official reservations with deposits.

This latest development will likely be a better representation of the demand since the company is asking for a lot more information about the installation of the home battery pack.

Tesla now offers free Powerwalls through its referral program – the top referrer already sold 88 Model S’s

Three months ago Tesla announced a referral program for Model S owners. By referring someone who ends up buying a Tesla Model S, the owner gets $1,000 credit from Tesla to put toward accessories, service or a car, and the new buyer gets $1,000 off his new Model S. The program is only in a “trial phase” until October 31, but the deadline is also a competition for top referrers.

Today, less than two weeks before the end of the trial, the automaker upped the ante by announcing that those who make 5 referrals will receive a Tesla Powerwall for free…
