Furthermore, the automaker intends to establish a new European R&D center as it ponders bringing EV production over from China as well.

Following EV battery agreements with CATL and EVE Energy last fall, BMW shared it is adding SVOLT Energy to its rolodex. The battery developer is a spinoff of China’s Great Wall Motor and has reportedly been awarded a massive contract to supply EV builds in Europe worth up to $13 billion.

Great Wall Motor has announced it will be next Chinese automaker to test out the market in Europe by launching an all-electric compact and plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) SUV in 2022. The company shared the news at IAA Mobility in Munich today alongside plans to debut the EVs under its WEY brand and existing ORA marque, both under the Great Wall Umbrella.

Battery systems manufacturer SVOLT has unveiled a cobalt-free battery pack at the Chengdu Motor Show in China. The company now claims to be the first to create a cobalt-free battery that has reached series production, although other battery manufacturers have claimed similar production achievements.
