But the scooter landscape is changing quickly as the industry shifts towards electrification. We sat down with the chairman of KYMCO, one of the largest scooter companies in the world, to discuss their plans to move towards electric scooters.

Gogoro heats up electric scooter battery swap war with new battery and scooter partners

Just yesterday, KYMCO announced a partnership with 22Motors to build electric scooters based on the Ionex swappable battery standard. Now one of KYMCO’s biggest rivals in the battery swapping EV space is firing back with their own announcement.

A single battery swapping standard is starting to emerge for light electric vehicles

KYMCO, the largest scooter manufacturer in Taiwan, may have developed the single swappable battery standard that we’ve all been waiting for. KYMCO’s electric scooters are powered by the company’s modular and removable Ionex batteries.

KYMCO developed the batteries with the goal of creating a standard battery platform that other companies could design electric vehicles around. Now they’ve declared their first publicly announced partnership that will see their batteries powering electric scooters built by another manufacturer.

NIU electric scooters expand around the globe with $118 deposits for Jan ’19 deliveries

In the last three years, NIU has produced and sold over 500,00 electric scooters that have driven over 1 billion kilometers. Earlier this year, NIU’s unveiled a new line of electric scooters specifically designed for the European market.

Now the company is expanding sales around the world, taking reservations for pre-orders with a $118 (€100) deposit.

KYMCO unveils Ionex Commercial, a B2B turnkey electric scooter suite with swappable batteries

KYMCO just unveiled Ionex Commercial, their new business-to-business (B2B) solution designed to help companies switch to electric scooters. The platform is built to aid businesses and governments by providing a simple and easy electric scooter service. Ionex Commercial includes multiple models of battery-swappable electric scooters as well as turnkey battery charging stations and a host of management and logistic software solutions.

The announcement was made by KYMCO’s chairman Allen Ko during the unveiling at the Salle Wagram event center. The ceremony was part of the Paris Motor Show.

Uber installing its own electric charging stations… for electric bicycles

China’s largest electric scooter maker Niu files for $150 million IPO in the US

While electric scooters (Vespa-style, not Razor-style) are not very widespread yet in the US, they are quickly becoming the most common form of transportation in Chinese cities.
