Mumbai wants thousands of electric ferries, and they’re starting with these flying boats

Politicians in Maharashtra hope to build the world’s largest electric mass transit system on the coastal metropolis’ waterways. It’s all starting now with a recent order of 11 of Swedish boat maker Candela’s P-12 electric ferries, often referred to as ‘flying boats’ due to the way their hydrofoils lift the hulls out of the water for faster speeds and better efficiencies.

My journey in the electric mobility segment recently brought me to Gothenburg, Sweden – home to the Skansen Kronen, ZEEKR’s design center, and of course, Volvo. Sweden is one of the Scandinavian markets embracing electrification, and it couldn’t be more apparent in its public transit network. This includes 100% electric ferries, of which I got the chance to tour and go for a ride.

Two big new all-electric ferries are coming to Canada

Electric propulsion is coming for virtually every mode of transportation, including maritime transportation. Ferries are a good place to start since they cover the same routes again and again. It makes it easy to plan for the range and charging solution of all-electric ferries.

Now Canada has got on board with the concept and ordered its first two new giant all-electric ferries.
