Sunrun, Tesla, and Renew Home announced an agreement today to aggregate more than 16 gigawatts of home batteries, thermostats, and other devices into what they say would be the largest distributed power plant in the country, aimed squarely at the surging electricity demand from data centers.

The deal sent Sunrun (RUN) shares up as much as 26% on Wednesday, as Wall Street bet the residential solar company can turn AI’s power crunch into a recurring revenue stream.

As Texas braces for tighter power margins and record demand on the ERCOT grid, Sunrun and NRG Energy are transforming home batteries into a giant virtual power plant. The two companies are integrating more home battery storage into the grid and tapping those batteries when the state needs power the most.

Solar + storage provider Sunrun and Maryland utility BGE are running the first residential vehicle-to-grid (V2G) distributed power plant in the US, and it’s powered by Ford F-150 Lightning trucks.
