Tesla launches Model 3 in Mexico

Today, Tesla is launching the Model 3 in Mexico – completing the availability of its latest vehicle in North America after launching it almost 2 years ago.

Tesla originally launched in Mexico back in December 2015.

It has been a slow ramp up for Tesla in the market.

The Model X arrived in June 2016 and that’s also when the first Supercharger stations went online.

Now, Tesla is also launching the Model 3 in the market. It will debut at Tesla’s Mexico City-Masaryk.

It’s sort of a coming home for the vehicle, which sources about 25% of its part from Mexico.

Electric vehicle sales in Mexico are still quite low. Fewer than 20,000 electric vehicles (HEV, PHEV and BEV combined) were sold in the country last year.

Like in many other markets, the introduction of the Model 3 is expected to have a significant impact on overall EV sales.

In the case of Mexico, there might be other circumstances that could help EV sales.

Last month, Chevy took advantage of some gas shortages in the country to sell its all-electric Bolt EV.
