Germany is in the spotlight of the automotive industry as the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show is coming to an end. While we are sorting through vehicle registration data, we decided to take a look at the top-selling electric vehicles in Germany. Unsurprisingly, the BMW i3 is the best-selling all-electric vehicle in its home turf, but sales are down 27% year over year while Tesla’s Model S is gaining market shares by growing sales 84% based on registration data. From January to August 2014, Tesla delivered 520 cars in the country, but during the same period in 2015, it delivered 958 Model S’s. Tesla is still a long way from its initial goal of selling 1,000 cars per month in the country, but looking at the data, the company is growing steadily:
On the other hand, BMW i3 sales have been steadily dropping since reaching their highest point in early 2014:
Fortunately, even though BMW didn’t unveil or announce any new all-electric ‘i’ vehicle at the Frankfurt Auto Show, the company did reiterate its commitment to all-electric vehicles and said its was in the “final stages of consideration” to introduce new EVs by expanding its “i” lineup. In the meantime, they did unveil two new plug-in hybrids: BMW 225xe and BMW 330e.
As for Tesla, CEO Elon Musk will be in Germany tomorrow to meet with Sigmar Gabriel, German Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy. You can expect Musk to discuss the company’s future plans in the country for the Model S, the upcoming Model X and even the Powerwall which will be introduced in Germany as part of the first few markets to get access to Tesla’s line of stationary energy storage products.

Not directly related to the article but looking at the Tesla graph, whats with the major dip in March and big boost in May/June? What is responsible for that?
Due to production and delivery cycles, Tesla always has a big boost in deliveries during the last month of each quarter. They also tried to get as many cars out there as possible for the financial results. So yeah the charts are looking “spiky” you are correct.
Musk said the company was working on stabilizing production and deliveries so that it becomes more constant. Looking at data from recent months, it looks like they are getting there. More on that later once I get through more data…
Good for tesla….id like to see numbers comparing them to i8 though. The i8 is closer to Tesla in performance even though it’s a coupe. I doubt people are cross shopping the i3 and P85.
i8 sales are marginal. Tesla sales 10x more Model S’s in almost any market. Also the i8 is barely an EV.
