Swagtron unveils new weird and wild electric bicycles and scooters

Swagtron is best known as one of the most affordable electric bicycle, e-scooter and e-everything else manufacturers. And despite their sometimes surprisingly low prices, the Swagtron e-bikes and e-scooters that we’ve tested have been surprisingly well-built.

Now the company is showing off their new product lineup at CES 2019 in Las Vegas. And the list is full of impressive and outlandish designs that you’ve just got to see to understand.

According to a statement by the company:

“In 2019, SWAGTRON will offer even more innovative light electric vehicles (LEVs), including e-bikes, electric scooters and electric skateboards. During CES, the brand will be showcasing its first full-size electric bikes in the form of beach cruisers and cargo bikes, as well as expanding its compact, folding designs—a segment which has proven extremely successful. Both electric scooters and skateboards will enter the off-road realm with high-powered options featuring suspension and all-terrain tires.”

Here’s a preview of what Swagtron has in store for 2019. And while prices are not yet available, they have historically been incredibly reasonable.

Swagtron electric beach cruiser e-bikes

Aiming squarely at Pedego’s territory, Swagtron is entering the electric beach cruiser market.

Their new models come with 250 W motors, 7-speed rear cassettes, options for 26″ or 700c wheels and tires, lightweight 6061 aluminum alloy frames, V-brakes and cargo racks.

While certainly not the highest-end beach cruisers, these should be perfect for tootin’ around coastal communities and college campuses. They aren’t going to climb big hills unassisted, but 250 W is plenty for relaxed cruising on flat terrain.

Swagtron Swagcycle 2.0

The original Swagcycle is an ultra-affordable $299 bicycle-shaped electric scooter. This year’s upgrade turns the Swagcycle 2.0 into a true electric bicycle with the addition of a pedal drive.

Other upgrades include rear suspension for a more comfortable ride and a more powerful 300 W motor.

The Swagcycle 2.0 also features a compact, folding aluminum frame, rear disc brake, 12″ pneumatic tires and LED lighting.

Prepare yourself, because this one gets a bit weird.

I present to you the Commander Suspension Tricycle!

I’ll let Swagtron explain this one in their own words:

“The Commander is an evolution in the concept of folding electric bikes. This pedal-free (throttle only) electric tadpole trike features independently actuated coil-sprung front suspension that draws inspiration from the trailing arm designs of trophy trucks. While not intended for off-road use specifically, it merges enhanced mobility with uncompromised stability. Conquer rough roads, curbs, train tracks and anything else the concrete jungle throws your way with confidence. A 350-watt motor drives the rear of three 14.5-inch wheels. A compact, folding design means that the alloy frame can be easily stored or transported when space is at a premium.”

Basically, this thing is designed to tackle anything in a city. While I’ve ridden tadpole trikes before, a leaning tadpole trike is new to me.

Unfortunately, the lack of pedals might bring into question the Commander’s legality as a “bicycle” in some locales. But considering it has the basic form factor of a bike (if you can ignore the double front wheels), you could probably fly under the radar for a while.

The folding feature also means you could stick this one in your car to bring it out to your local proving grounds for some real fun. Without knowing the range or top speed yet though (yet to be released), it’s hard to say just how much ridiculous fun you could have with this crazy tricycle.

Swagtron Off-Road Electric Scooter

If you like the Bird or Lime scooters in theory but wish they were robust enough to ride down some museum stairs, then Swagtron might have the scooter for you. Their new Off-Road Electric Scooter looks like a complete beast of a scooter.

With dual front and rear swingarm suspension, this scooter is meant for riding in extreme terrain. An 800W motor powers its 11-inch knobby tires while hydraulic brakes keep that power in check.

Bright LED headlamps illuminate your path on empty trails at night, and a battery sufficient for 30 miles (48 km) of range should give you plenty of play time. And while we’ve ridden and reviewed crazy dual suspension scooters before, this one is likely to be much more affordable.

Swagtron Hybrid Convertible Scooter/E-bike

Another entry that straddles the fence between convenient and quirky, Swagtron’s new hybrid scooter tries to be everything at once. It can take the shape of a conventional scooter or fold into a seated bicycle-shaped scooter.

Though it might look a bit silly, the specs are actually quite nice. An 800W hub motor powers the scooter up to 15 mph (25 km/h). The scooter is also rated for 15 miles (25 km) of range. That should be sufficient for most urban commutes.

With only electric braking though, don’t expect this scooter to stop on a dime the way the Off-Road Electric Scooter’s hydraulic disk brakes can.

Swagtron Seated Electric Scooter

While the above scooter has a seated option, this one is a truly seated scooter.

As described by Swagtron:

“For those looking to maximize comfort and utility combined with enhanced mobility, a seated version of the Swagger answers the call. Perhaps the most practical machine in the SWAGTRON lineup, it can be ridden either seated or standing, and features a cargo basket in the rear. Powered by a 350-watt motor, it rolls on 12.5-inch pneumatic tires for a smooth ride.”

While not the most powerful of Swagtron’s lineup, it will certainly be one of the most comfortable scooters in the company’s fleet. And that rear cargo basket is a nice touch, considering most scooters have little or no cargo capacity. Plus, the large floorboard allows you to carry even more items, especially odd shaped and bulky ones, right at your feet.

Swagskate Off-Road Electric Skateboard

Another interesting addition this year includes an off-road electric skateboard. Named the Swagskate, this all terrain electric skateboard includes dual 800W hub motors, massive 9″ pneumatic tires and both front and rear suspension.

With a top speed of 25 mph (40 km/h) and a rated range of 18 miles (29 km), the Swagskate could prove to be formidable competition for market heavyweights such as the Evolve Bamboo GTX all terrain electric skateboard we previously reviewed.
