Tesla’s Autopilot is now better than humans at highway driving – Elon Musk press conference for the release of software v7.1

Elon Musk held a press conference with Q&A yesterday for the release of Tesla’s software update v7.1 for the Model S and X. You can find a recording of the call below and a few highlights of the discussion.

The CEO started the call with a brief description of the current capacity of the new ‘Summon’ feature, which he describes as a “baby step”, and what the future holds for the feature.

The highlight of the call was at around 2:00, when Musk said that he believes that with the improvements to the Autopilot in v7.1, the system is now better at highway driving than humans. He made the claim with his usual cautious way of speaking and specified that we will have to wait for the statistics.

He also added that improved fleet learning capability will help the Autopilot achieve this “better than human” standard.

At around 5:30, Musk confirmed that the company will release a “version” of the “robot snake charger“. The new version is supposed to be “less creepy” than the prototype. The CEO added that it will probably be roll out some Superchargers first, before being sold to Tesla owners.

At around 13:00, The CEO said that he wasn’t aware of any case where the Autopilot caused an accident, but he specified that the only cases where drivers thought the Autopilot caused an accident, the system wasn’t actually on.
