Tesla to announce patent news at 10am tomorrow

According to CEO Elon Musk:

Prediction:  The news will allow 3rd parties to build superchargers (yay!) and also allow other brands of Car to charge at Tesla locations.

The news comes ahead of Tesla’s Japan rollout where the competing CHAdeMO standard rules for DC fast charging.  The Tesla CHAdeMO adapter is still unavailable for purchase but we’ve seen a few in use.

If they’re opening up their charging patents to get other folks using their standard, it’s such a smart move. Hopefully this will significantly lessen the chances of any sort of charger format war.

It’s so refreshing every time this guy makes an announcement – nice to see someone putting their genius to good use and making money a secondary or even tertiary objective.
