The plug-in hybrid BYD Denza B8 didn’t set the sales charts on fire, but its high-tech suspension promised a smooth ride across just about any terrain, adjusting damping and ride height while independently controlling hydraulic pressure at each wheel. It’s a neat trick, but one driver has figured out a whole new use for it: avoiding traffic boots.
Footage circulating on Chinese social media accounts this weekend showed a BYD Denza B8 SUV driving down a public street on three wheels, its front-left wheel raised off the pavement and a yellow-and-red metal traffic clamp still attached to the raised wheel. If it’s genuine (and, frankly, even if it’s not), the video opens to the door to a whole new way to park wherever you feel like parking.
After all, the meter maids aren’t likely to put a traffic boot on a vehicle that’s already been booted, regardless of where it’s parked, you know?
How the trick is done

The BYD makes it happen thanks to its DiSus-P Ultra hydraulic suspension, which takes active body control way beyond the usual “ride and handling” bit by allowing the plug-in SUV to independently raise or lower each corner up to 300 mm (~11.5 inches) with a lifting capacity of up to nine metric tons (~a lot).
BYD has demonstrated the SUV driving on three wheels at speeds of up to 15 km/h (~10 mph), as well as lifting a wheel to allow a tire change without a conventional jack – the same trick the Denza 8 driver seems to be employing here to drive away from what seems to be a bad situation without paying the expected fine for parking in a no-no spot.
The BYD Denza Bao 8 Flash Charge Edition packs a 46.7 kWh battery good for up to 75 miles of all-electric range on the CLTC cycle. That battery is backed up by a 2.0 liter, 272 hp turbocharged internal combustion engine that extends the three-row SUV‘s combined range to 1,380 bladder-busting kilometers (~850 miles).
You can check out the alleged escape video, below, then let us know what sort of criminal enterprise you’d get up to with a fully adjustable suspension system like this one, in the comments.
