DeLorean may have a flying car in the air before Tesla does [video]

Your eyes do not deceive you, dear readers – the iconic, stainless-steel bodied and gullwing-doored sportscar brand DeLorean is not only somehow still alive, but they apparently have enough money to campaign a DeLorean-branded eVTOL in the new Airspeeder racing series.

As anyone following Tesla can already tell you, CEO Elon Musk is affected by the DeLorean time machine from the classic, Back to the Future movies from the 1980s – and a quick look at the Model X’ “falcon-wing” doors, the Cybertruck’s stainless steel finish, and obsessive pursuit of “hover” abilities for the long-delayed Tesla Roadster 2.0 will absolutely convince you if you had any doubts. It is perhaps ironic, then, that on this, the day the Tesla Roadster 2.0’s hovering technology is expected to make its debut (like, for real this time), that we’re talking about a high tech, electric, and wicked fast stainless steel-finished vehicle wearing the DeLorean nameplate.

“DeLorean is the original flying car brand. Long before anyone had built one, the whole world already knew what a flying DeLorean looked like,” says Matt Pearson, Founder and CEO, Airspeeder. “Every great racing series is defined by the constructors who choose to compete in it. To have an American icon line up on our grid in our first international season tells you where this sport is going.”

A new era of flying car racing (maybe)

Like all other Airspeeder entrants, DeLorean will race a spec Airspeeder Mk3C chassis. For the 2027-28 season, however, the company will reportedly work with student engineering teams from UC Berkeley and Georgia Tech to design an all-new eVTOL racer.

It’s not entirely clear if the Airspeeder team is going to be much more than a PR stunt, of course, but the DeLorean name, at least, is worth a few headlines – especially on a day when the car company it inspired is about to have its most significant new product reveal in years.
