Polestar launches new lower-priced Polestar 3 as first models reach customers

Polestar introduced a new, lower-priced Polestar 3 model on Thursday to intensify the competition with Tesla and Porsche. The new model comes as the first Polestar 3 customers received their electric SUVs.

Polestar 3 gets lower-priced model as deliveries kick-off

As its first EV built on two continents, Polestar is expecting big results from its new electric SUV. The Polestar 3 is “the SUV for the electric age” with an aerodynamic design, luxurious tech-loaded interior, and sports-car-like feel.

With a massive 11 kWh battery and highly efficient motor, the Polestar 3 gets up to 315 miles range. It also includes fast charging (10% to 80%) capabilities in 30 mins to get you back on the road.

Polestar 3 production began in Chengdu, China, in April, while US production in South Carolina is slated for this summer.

A few months ago, Polestar revealed its electric SUV would start $10,000 less than expected, with a new MSRP of $73,400.

Polestar announced a new Long range Single motor Polestar 3 model on Thursday. The new lower-priced Polestar 3 starts at $85,500 (€79,890), including the handover fee. The new model is available to order in Europe while North America and Australia will follow later this year.

The Long-range Single Motor model offers “a new entry-point for our flagship electric SUV,” according to CEO Thomas Ingenlath.

Powered by the same 111 kWh battery, the new Polestar 3 offers up to 404 miles (650 km) WLTP range.

The new model arrives as the first Polestar 3 buyers received their new electric SUVs. Polestar is delivering models to customers across two continents, with more markets coming throughout 2024.

The first three Polestar 3’s were delivered in Sweden, while the North American Polestar team is handing over the first models in California, Illinois, and New York. Polestar plans to deliver more models in Germany and Norway on Friday.

315 miles from a 111kWh battery sounds like pretty poor efficiency to me. That comes out to something like ~2.85 miles per kWh, or 350Wh per mile. That's not far off the rated efficiency of the F-150 Lightning with the 320 mile range (~2.4mi/kWh). And with much less utility compared to a pickup truck, no less.

Polestar’s new electric SUV is also eligible for its $7,500 Polestar Clean Vehicle Incentive for leases.

Meanwhile, Polestar offers various packs to upgrade the vehicle. These include: Pilot pack (included), Pilot pack with LiDAR (+$5,000), Plus Pack (+$5,500) and Pro pack (+2,100).

The news comes after Polestar launched the new 2025 Polestar 2 Wednesday with more range and new styling (check out the 2025 Polestar 2 here).

Can Polestar’s new electric SUV compete with Tesla’s top-selling Model Y, starting at $44,990, with up to 320 miles range? Or Porsche’s new Macan EV, starting at $78,800? Let us know what you think in the comments.
