All-electric vehicles have long suffered from misconceptions about their usefulness and power capacity. Now that the Tesla Model S is the fastest accelerating vehicle in production and it can travel in the Australian outback, those misconceptions seem like a thing of the past.
The ability to tow significant cargo is also another new achievement breaking EV misconceptions and it has never been more beautifully illustrated than by a Tesla Model X towing an all-electric boat.
The Model X in question is not just any Model X, but the Founders Series Tesla Model X owned by Sylvain Juteau of Roulez Electrique.
It is towing a 3000 lbs LEAR204 all-electric boat. Not unlike the Alfastreet Energy 23C featured in Fully Charged last month, the LEAR is a low-speed leisure boat.
Sylvain said that the Model X has so much torque that he couldn’t even feel the boat behind his SUV.

The Model X is the first all-electric vehicle that can tow a significant weight. When configured with 22″ wheels, the Model X can tow 3,500 pounds and when configured with 20″ wheels, the towing capacity of the SUV increases to 5,000 pounds, according to Tesla.
Of course, like with any vehicle, towing will affect the range of the Model X. Earlier this year, Bowlus performed some tests with its 2,300 pounds Road Chief trailer showing that the Model X P90D retains about 70% of its 250-mile EPA-rated range while towing the trailer at a moderate highway cruising speed of 50 to 55 mph.
The Model X towing capacity was also demonstrated earlier this year when a Model X P90D beat a Alfa Romeo 4C in a drag race, while the Tesla was actually towing another Alfa Romeo 4C.
