According to a new report from the Reno Gazette-Journal, Tesla acquired several permits for multi-million dollar interior construction work at the Gigafactory located just outside Reno, Nevada. One of the permit is for a $10 million project of “architectural interiors”.Last week we reported on Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirming that Tesla recently secured a “certificate of occupancy” and that he expects the company to start producing batteries in the spring.
Today we learn that Tesla is accelerating the work on the interior of the massive factory as the exterior is nearing completion (see picture from September above). The company applied for nearly as many permits in the last quarter as it did during the last year.
According to the RGJ report, those permits include work for:
- mechanical piping at $7 million
- phase one roofing at $4.5 million
- exterior building walls at $3 million
- electrical switchyard at $2 million
- exterior hardscapes at $ 1 million
The company is also working on a ~$13 million steel and concrete mezzanine, which should add even more workspace to the factory’s planned 10 million sq-ft footprint. The current building is only the pilot plant and represents a fourth of the size of the entire factory.
Tesla is also working on another interesting project: a onsite data center.
A recent analysis predicts that the Gigafactory could reduce Tesla’s battery costs by 50% once working at full capacity in 2020.
