Following the acquisition of Seeo, Bosch expects to bring solid-state battery cells to market in 5 years

Last month Bosch reported the acquisition of battery maker start-up Seeo , today the auto part and electronic giant released more details about its plan for battery production going forward. Bosch expects to bring to market Seeo’s solid-state battery cells within 5 years.

The company says it will combine Seeo’s expertise in solid-state cells with Bosch’s financial resources to be “production-ready in as little as five years”. Dr. Volkmar Denner, the chairman of the board of management of Robert Bosch GmbH, said in a press release:

Bosch is using its knowledge and considerable financial resources to achieve a breakthrough for electromobility. Solid-state cells could be a breakthrough technology. Disruptive start-up technology is meeting the broad systems knowledge and financial resources of a multinational company.

Bosch aims at doubling the energy density of current battery cells with its innovative solid-state structure, which would double the range of EVs.

Seeo already achieved an impressive 350 watt-hours per kilogram energy density in sample cells. In comparison, the battery cells used in the Tesla Model S are believed to have an energy density of ~230 watt-hours per kilogram.
