Following recent reports of exceptionally long delays for vehicle repairs, we reached out to Tesla to get an explanation and the company acknowledged some issues with delays. They are actively working on improving repair time, according to a company representative.

But in the case of a recent highly-publicized third party repair, the company points a finger at multiple problems experienced at the body shop for the delays following an investigation.

One of the main concerns of current and future Tesla owners is the company’s ability to scale its service operations after the Model 3 launch, which will add hundred of thousands of vehicles in Tesla’s global fleet.

The automaker is already having difficulties keeping up with service demand in some regions, but it has now announced a “reengineering and expansion” of its operations in order to prepare for Model 3.

While electric vehicles, like Tesla’s, require less maintenance because they are equipped with fewer moving parts than their gasoline-powered counterparts, owners are often still better off with some service and inspections. EVs are still cars and inherently complex machines traveling in often less than ideal conditions. You still want to check your wheel alignment, access fluid and coolant levels, and look for potential parts needing replacements.

That’s why Tesla offers maintenance plans and today, they introduce a new one for the Model X and an updated one for the Model S. The new plans are more expensive than what Tesla was previously offering, but they also offer more services, including hardware improvements – not unlike Tesla’s included software upgrades.

The “Right to Repair”, which primarily aims to force electronic manufacturers to sell replacement parts and make their diagnostic and service manuals available to independent repair shops and consumers, is gaining some traction.

It is currently only in place in Massachusetts, which is why it’s the only state where Tesla owners can register to access repair manuals, service documents, wiring diagrams, and part information, but Tesla President Jon McNeill now says that the automaker is working on opening the program.

Tesla gets a service center with an expiration date in Indiana

Good news for the people of Indiana? Tesla has signed a lease for the first full blown service center to open in Indianapolis that would complement their lone store at Fashion Mall. While having some leased space in Zionsville for service is certainly good news to local owners, there’s also a bad news.

Tesla could face yet another potential roadblock from a bill proposed by the state government that would effectively disallow them from selling any further.

Last month, we reported on Tesla Motors Club member Troy doing some great data collecting on Supercharger concentration. His report looked into Supercharger coverage per market versus the number of Tesla vehicles in the same markets.

The report was a way to better understand Supercharger coverage ahead of the important increase of Tesla’s fleet of vehicles with the upcoming Model 3. Aside for Superchargers, the other main concern with the imminent increase is service.

Now Troy published a similar report, but for service center concentration per market.

Former Tesla employees spin-off an independent ‘Tesla Service center’, face roadblocks from the automaker

We recently reported that Tesla is not able to meet the demand for service in Denmark after deliveries surged following the phasing out of its tax break for electric vehicles by the end of 2015. While not great for EVs in the mid to long-term, it propelled Tesla’s Model S to become the best-selling vehicle in the country at the end of the year.

Tesla’s sales in Denmark have since virtually vanished, but the thousands of vehicles still need to be serviced. Now Tesla is having difficulty keeping up and former employees decided to set up shop in order to independently service owners, but they report facing roadblocks from Tesla.

Tesla adds F1-inspired ‘fast lanes’ at service centers to curb wait times

Tesla service

Tesla’s reliability improvements have been helping capacity needs at its service centers, but the recent increase in Model X deliveries added a strain on the workload. A lot of early units need some tuning, which in turn require to free up service hours at Tesla service centers in order to fulfill regular service appointments to perform repairs.

Some Tesla owners are complaining about weeks or sometimes even months of wait time. Jon McNeil, Tesla President, said that he is aware of the issue, which he referred to as a “challenge”, and that Tesla introduced ‘fast lanes’ at service centers to “address minor issues in an expedited way.”
