Demonstration of Tesla Model S saving owner from the rain by picking him up with new ‘Summon’ feature [video]

In its latest video, Drag Times demonstrated a potential application for Tesla’s latest feature. Drag Times used the new ‘Summon’ feature to  autonomously move the Model S a few dozen feet to “save” the owner from the rain by picking him up under a porte-cochère.

The original headline of the video “Tesla Model S Picks Owner up in the Rain using the new Summon Feature” is a bit misleading. It looks like Drag Times had to line up the car since the Model S cannot currently navigate a parking lot under the v7.1 build of the Autopilot, but the video is nonetheless an interesting demonstration of the potential applications for the feature.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk expects the Summon feature to eventually allow Teslas to drive autonomously anywhere across the country to meet you, charging itself along the way, but the company is also expected to gradually build on the feature and navigating parking lots could be included in a feature update.

Well, would be cool if it could back out of it’s parking space, and “come to me”, but this thing moves like a glacier, and as mentioned it can’t navigate to me, so this really is a demo of “I wish I could summon my car”, because it’s not actually doing it in any useful way… yet.

So the car was “parked” already directly 39 feet in a straight line where it needed to be picked up?

I’m sure they (Tesla) are starting slow to ease people into the process so they don’t get a bunch of crazy YouTube videos
