For its first all-electric vehicle, Porsche wants to cater to its own fans by making “a real Porsche” and bringing the same Porsche driving feel to an all-electric powertrain.
Now the German premium automaker says that it is already accumulating reservations in a few markets and it has received a “fantastic” reaction from customers even though they have yet to see the production car.
Earlier this year, we reported on Porsche starting to take reservations with deposits in a few markets for the Taycan, which was called the Mission E at that point.
Porsche’s UK managing director Alexander Pollich commented on the reservations without disclosing a number (via Autocar):
The reaction from customers has been fantastic – from the moment we announced the car to now, when we have asked customers to register their interest for the first cars. The history of Porsche began with an electric car in 1898 and that provides some inspiration and motivation for us. Of course there was a big gap, but we have led with the introduction of hybrids and now we will use our heritage and learnings to offer a class-leading electric car.
What’s most fascinating is that those people haven’t seen the car yet.
We had a good look at the Mission E concept on which the Taycan is based, but there are often big differences between concepts and production cars.
In this case, Porsche insists that the Taycan will be fairly similar to the concept. We have also seen some test mules, but they were always heavily camouflaged.
Last month, Porsche released the first teaser images of new Taycan.
Pollich commented on the rest of the development process and unveiling:
The next 18 months will be fascinating, as we develop and reveal the car, but what is already clear is that customers are keen. They are talking to our dealers asking how to get to the top of the priority lists and asking to access more information.
The Porsche executive also briefly commented on Tesla:
They have been the pioneers and they have set a big challenge. What’s clear is that at Porsche we are planning to rise to that challenge, not just with our car, but in providing owners with the full 360 degree view to allow seamless ownership, including creating a supercharger network.
He probably meant to say “ultra-fast charger network”, which is what Porsche has been calling its charging stations. The “Supercharger Network” is what Tesla has been calling its own charging network.
Porsche recently connected its first ultra-fast 800-volt charging station to the grid.
