Virgin Hyperloop One, previously known as Hyperloop One before they secured a new investment from Richard Branson’s Virgin, has announced a new partnership with DP World for a new ultra-fast hyperloop cargo system with global ambitions.
DP World is one of the world largest port operators and it has been supporting the development of hyperloop systems for years now through Hyperloop One.
It invested in several funding rounds of the company and they are working together on a hyperloop project at the port of Dubai.
Now the two companies are linking themselves together even closer by. launching a new hyperloop system for cargo: DP World Cargospeed.
Virgin Hyperloop One Rob Lloyd says that the company is seeing the growth of e-commerce contributing significantly to the demand for fast transport of goods and they think the logistics industry is in need of a new solution.
He wrote:
“To address this challenge we’re joining with DP World, a global expert in trade and supply chain logistics, and are introducing DP World Cargospeed–an international brand for hyperloop-enabled cargo systems to support the fast, sustainable and efficient delivery of palletized cargo. Designed to provide exceptional service for high-priority, on-demand goods, DP World Cargospeed systems will deliver freight at the speed of flight and closer to the cost of trucking.”
The company presents the system as being equivalent to “the cost of trucking and speed of flight”:
They want to combine DP World expertise in port operations with Virgin Hyperloop One’s hyperloop technology to move goods between cities at a high-speed and low-cost:
“Traveling at top speeds of 1000 km/h DP World Cargospeed systems, enabled by Virgin Hyperloop One technology, will transport high-priority, time-sensitive goods including fresh food, medical supplies, electronics, and more. It will expand freight transportation capacity by connecting with existing modes of road, rail, ports and air transport. Additionally, the Virgin Hyperloop One system powering DP World Cargospeed is unique in that it doesn’t need to be passenger-only or cargo-only. Rather, it is a mixed-use system that fully utilizes system capacity and maximizes economic and social benefits.”
They are leveraging the same hyperloop tube and pod technologies that they have been working on for years now – albeit the fact that it was mainly aimed at passenger travel.
Earlier this month, Virgin Hyperloop One released a new video of its full-scale working pod prototype in its test tube track.
