All-electric Chevy Bolt EV becomes a police car

We have often reported on how Tesla’s all-electric vehicles are becoming surprisingly increasingly popular with police departments all around the world.

But now it’s the Chevy Bolt EV’s turn to electrify a police car fleet.

The Bolt EV is not as big and doesn’t pack nearly as much power as Tesla’s Model S and Model X vehicles that we have seen used by police forces so far, but it has plenty of range and functionality to be used as an administrative vehicle – just like the LAPD has been using (barely) a large fleet of all-electric BMW i3 vehicles.

But the Hyattsville City Police Department in Maryland insisted on equipping a Bolt EV with all the necessary equipment to be tested as a police patrol car.

It’s a smaller vehicle than the sedans and SUVs they generally used so they say they got “creative” in fitting the equipment in the electric vehicle.

The Chevy Bolt EV is just a part of the Hyattsville City Police Department’s effort to electrify its fleet of 65 vehicles.

They bought the Bolt EV along with a Ford Fusion Hybrid, a Zero electric motorcycle, which is already really popular with police departments, a few Segways, and a golf cart, thanks to a grant from Maryland Energy Administration to clean public car fleets.

Along with the vehicles, the city is also installing two DC fast-charge stations and 8 level 2 charging stations at three public parking lots which will be available to the general public at no cost.
