BYD’s new high-tech 5-seat electric SUV revealed with 690 hp and dual 30″ screens

BYD’s new Tang EV, its “tech-savvy” flagship five-seat SUV, was revealed in a regulatory filing with dual electric motors delivering a combined 690 horsepower. The interior is even more impressive.

BYD prepares to launch the new Tang EV

The third-generation Tang will join the recent Da Tang (“Great Tang”) as BYD expands its flagship electric SUV lineup.

Ahead of its expected launch later this year, the new Tang was revealed in the latest batch of proposed vehicles for sale by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

According to the filing, the third-generation Tang is 5,045 mm long, 1,980 mm wide, and 1,740 mm tall, with a 2,950 mm wheelbase, or 145 mm longer than its predecessor.

Unlike the current Tang, which offers five- and six-seat configurations, the new version will be a 5-seater only.

It uses a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain. The front electric motor produces 288 horsepower (215 kW), while the rear delivers 402 horsepower (300 kW) for a combined output of up to 690 horsepower (515 kW).

The filing reveals it will use a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by BYD’s Wuwei Fudi Battery Co.

Although it wasn’t in the release, the third-generation Tang EV will use BYD’s Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging technology, enabling it to charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes.

It will be available in two battery packs: 88.682 kWh and 105.792 kWh, delivering CLTC ranges of 730 km (453 miles), 830 km (515 miles), and 850 km (528 miles), depending on the configuration.

After it debuted at the Chengdu Auto Show in August, Lu Tian, General Manager of BYD’s Dynasty lineup, revealed the first official interior images earlier this month.

The “8-series, five-seat, tech-savvy flagship SUV,” as Lu called it, features two massive screens. One is a stretched 35.4″ integrated display, and the other is a 30″ panoramic screen. It will be available in two interior color schemes: Dune Beige and Amber Brown.

Like many flagship models nowadays, the new Tang features zero-gravity captain’s chairs in the second row. Lu said the five-seat SUV will provide over 1,000 mm of second-row legroom.

It’s also loaded with BYD’s premium tech and other features, including its DiSus-A intelligent body control system with a dual-chamber air suspension, and its God’s Eye B advanced driving assistance system.

BYD is expected to launch the third-generation Tang by the end of 2026. Since the full-size Great Tang starts at 239,900 yuan ($35,500), the five-seater will likely offer a smaller, more affordable alternative.

In its first three months on the market, BYD has sold over 10,000 units of the flagship full-size SUV.
