Here’s our first look at the new Mercedes GLC EV: The sleek SUV looks even better electric

Mercedes previews first look at the new GLC EV

Mercedes gave us our first official look at the new GLC EV as it put the electric SUV through the paces during winter testing in Northern Sweden.

Powered by its new EQ Technology, Mercedes promises the electric GLC “sets new benchmarks” in driving range, charging speed, computing power, and efficiency.

As the first EV powered by its upcoming MB.EA electric vehicle architecture, the GLC will be one of the most critical Mercedes-Benz models yet. The platform will underpin its upcoming electric vehicles, including the GLC and S-Class sedan.

Designed from the ground up as a dedicated EV platform, the MB.EA will set the electric GLC apart from the current gas and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions.

Mercedes said several different battery options will be available. The top battery variant will offer sustained rates of more than 320 kW, which can add 162 miles in 10 minutes.

According to Car and Driver, which tested the prototype, Mercedes expects the roughly 94.5 kWh battery to unlock just over 400 miles of WLTP range, or around 300 miles on the EPA scale.

Powered by a dual-motor AWD powertrain, the prototype packed around 483 horsepower. Using a Disconnect Unit (DCU), the front-axle drive unit can engage or disengage for more control. Like the Porsche Taycan, the electric GLC includes a two-speed transmission on the rear axle.

Although the interior was completely covered, it’s expected to feature Mercedes’ new MB.OS operating system as the company moves toward software-defined vehicles. The top-of-the-line trim is expected to feature a LiDAR with Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities.

From what we can see, the electric GLC looks like a massive upgrade already compared to the EQC, which it will indirectly replace.

We will learn more about the Mercedes GLC EV when it officially debuts at the IAA Auto Show in Munich this September. Check back soon for more info leading up to the event.

The current GLC 350e 4MATIC PHEV costs $59,900 in the US, so the electric model is expected to be priced slightly higher at around $65,000.
