Last week, Tesla announced a new all-glass roof option similar to what it unveiled on its Model 3 prototype earlier this year, but available now in the Model S. While the company made the announcement last week, it only showed renders of the new option on its online design studio.
Now we have our first real look at the new roof option.
A friend of the site, Bjorn Hanson, was at the Fremont Factory today for a tour of the plant. Just after his tour, he spotted a brand new Model S P100D that had just come off the assembly line with the new all-glass roof option.
He managed to get a few shots of the roof and I will let you judge it for yourself, but it’s quite an impressive look in my opinion.
According to CEO Elon Musk, the all-glass option “makes the interior feel amazing”. It’s hard to convey with a picture, but Bjorn managed to get a shot of the interior. Here’s a gallery he shared with us:
Of course, if you look close enough you can also see some of the new Autopilot sensors.
As you can see, the Model S also features the new all-white interior that is only available in the Model X – at least according to Tesla’s online design studio. We asked Tesla for an explanation and we will update if we get one. (Update: Ultra white is available in the S, but only for the P100D.)
Musk also said that through the design and engineering process of the new roof, Tesla “reinforced the surrounding body structure for improved safety” – though he emphasized that the Model S already had a 5-star rating for rollover (and also in all other categories).
The glass is ultraviolet and infrared (for heat) reflective. The new option is $1,500, while the panoramic sunroof option is now $2,000.
The new glass roof comes as Musk confirmed Tesla launched a new ‘Tesla Glass’ technology group within the company to develop more glass products, including for the new solar tiles, but also for automotive applications. It not clear at this point, but this new option could be the first available product developed by the group.
