Prinoth is getting charged up for winter with a little help from Scania

The winter equipment experts at Prinoth are partnering with Swedish trucking group SCANIA on a pair of new, battery-electric snow groomers that are ready to hit Europe’s ski slopes with up to 624 kWh of battery power all winter long.

You read that right. Scania will provide Prinoth with its in-house Core 800 li-ion battery system – a 691V solution that includes integrated liquid cooling and a proprietary charging management system that’s built around energy-dense battery packs that are meant to be modular and scalable from just 21 kWh all the way up to a whopping 624 kWh. More than enough, in other words, to keep carving fresh corduroy long after the lifts start spinning.

“Collaborating with Prinoth is an exciting challenge for us, as it involves deploying our battery technology in extremely demanding conditions,” says Elin Åkerström, Managing Director, Scania Industrial Batteries. “Snow groomers operate in very low temperatures and steep terrain, moving heavy volumes of snow. This requires batteries that can deliver high power, withstand cold climates, and handle vibrations. We are proud that our technology has been recognized through this long-term agreement.”

The machines in question are an electrified version of the Prinoth Husky and the recently announced Leitwolf E-Motion, which places the Scania Core 800 battery packs in both top and side orientations to meet higher energy and power requirements, further expanding the available use cases for the brand’s heavy-duty snow groomers.

Cold-weather capable

Scania has signed a long-term agreement to supply its Core 800 battery packs to Italian snow groomer maker Prinoth, part of the High Technology Industries (HTI) Group. The packs will power two fully electric groomers: the Husky E-Motion and the Leitwolf E-Motion.

While the announcement of the Leitwolf E-Motion is new, the relationship between Prinoth and Scania reaches back a number of years, with the first of the Scania battery-equipped Prinoth snow groomers hitting the slopes all the way back in 2022. Since that time, the zero emission machines have proven the capability – and even the superiority of electric equipment in extreme cold over and over again.

“At Prinoth, we have chosen to continue our collaboration with Scania because of the high quality of their battery systems, which we have tested in some of the most challenging environmental conditions,” explains Roberto Pegoraro, Prinoth’s Head of R&D Snow Groomers. “Scania’s team has contributed deep technical expertise and a strong commitment to meeting our needs, while working together with us to continuously improve our products.”

Scania’s industrial battery systems are already used across a wide range of applications, including mining, construction, agriculture, and logistics vehicles, as well as energy storage solutions and airport ground support equipment.
