Volkswagen opens ID. Polo orders at $40,000, but a more affordable model is coming

The new entry-level EV is finally here. Volkswagen opened pre-orders for the ID. Polo on Wednesday, starting at 33,795 euros ($40,000). The promised base version at 25,000 euros ($29,000) will follow shortly.

Volkswagen ID. Polo orders open in Europe

Volkswagen’s answer to low-cost Chinese manufacturers like BYD is finally here. The ID. Polo is the first model from the German automaker’s new family of entry-level electric vehicles.

The electric Polo is bringing a new look, redesigned interior, and upgraded powertrain to Volkswagen’s EV lineup. It’s also the first to bear an established Volkswagen name as the company aims to recapture the brand’s essence in the modern era.

Following the new ID.3 Neo, introduced earlier this month, the ID. Polo is kicking off a new generation of “true Volkswagen” models.

“With the ID. Polo, we are making electric mobility accessible to many more people: with clear and timeless design, intuitive operation, strong quality and technologies from higher segments,” Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer said.

The electric Polo is also the first to feature the new Volkswagen Pure Positive design language, or, as chief designer Andreas Mindt calls it, the “secret sauce.”

Drawing inspiration from iconic models like the first-gen Golf, the design brings a modern look with a “likable front end and powerful rear.”

The interior features Volkswagen’s new cockpit design and the Innovision infotainment system. The setup includes a 10″ Digital Cockpit display and a 13″ Innovision infotainment screen.

Based on customer feedback, Volkswagen is bringing back physical buttons for climate control and other functions, which are now located below the infotainment and on the steering wheel.

Bring a touch of nostalgia, the ID. Polo features a new “retro display” that gives the digital displays the look and feel of the Golf I.

Measuring 4,053 mm in length, 1,816 mm in width, and 1,530 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm, the electric Polo is about the same size as the gas-powered model, but the ID. Polo offers “significantly better space utilization” with a flat battery pack design.

For example, the electric Polo offers 25% more luggage space than the gas model with 441 liters. When the backseats are folded, the capacity increases to 1,240 liters, up from 1,125 liters in the gas Polo.

The Volkswagen ID. Polo will be available with three power outputs: 85 kW (114 hp), 99 kW (133 hp), and 155 kW (208 hp). A high-performance GTI version will join later this year, delivering 166 kW (223 hp).

The 85 kW and 99 kW versions will be equipped as standard with a 37 kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery, while the 155 kW variant is powered by a 52 kWh NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) battery, offering a WLTP driving range of up to 282 miles (454 km).

Using DC fast charging, the smaller (37 kWh) battery can recharge from 10% to 80% in as little as 23 minutes. The 52 kWh battery version takes about 24 minutes.

Based on Volkswagen’s new MEB+ platform with updated software, the ID. Polo offers a suite of driver-assist features, including Connected Travel Assist with traffic-light recognition.

The electric Polo is among the first Volkswagen models to offer vehicle-to-load (V2L) as standard, enabling it to supply up to 3.6 kW to external devices, e-bikes, and more.

Volkswagen opened orders for the ID. Polo Life with the 155 kW drive and 52 kWh battery in Germany on Wednesday, starting at 33,795 euros ($40,000).

The base ID. Polo will follow this summer, starting at 24,995 euros ($29,000), alongside other drive and battery options.
