Last year, the BYD “Shenzhen” set sail on its first voyage with 9,200 parking spots – or enough space to fill 20 football fields, making BYD’s transport ship easily the world’s largest. Now, as the Chinese car brand sets its sights on Europe and North America, it’s ordering 10 more.
Citing multiple industry chain sources and quotes on LinkedIn, Middle Eastern maritime magazine Robban Assafina is reporting that BYD placed an order for ten additional 9,200 CEU pure car and truck carriers. The rumored order would bring BYD’s existing fleet to 18 LNG-powered ships, with a staggering combined cargo capacity of more than 130,000 (!) cars.

This order is more evidence that car carrier demand is rising on the back of rising global demand for Chinese vehicle exports, and BYD’s moves to expand its dedicated fleet of owned marine vessels underscores the scale of its growing international ambitions.
Global Growth
Since launching its first vehicle in March 2023, BYD has registered more than 110,000 vehicles in the UK. Through the month of August, BYD’s registrations have surged by 98%, with over 48,000 vehicles registered in the UK. BYD now accounts for 3.48% of the UK’s new car market, up from just 1.92% during the same period last year. BYD is making a similar push for rapid grown on the continent, as well, introducing an updated version of the brand’s Great Seagull EV first shown at the Chengdu Auto Show earlier this year.
CarNewsChina reports that BYD exported 184,000 passenger vehicles from China last month alone, up 131% year-over-year and more than 6% from the month prior. BYD accounted for 35.4% of China’s passenger “new energy” vehicle exports (read: EV and hybrid).
BYD’s exports reached 1,127,000 vehicles through August of this year, representing nearly 90% growth from the same period in 2025.
