We write a lot about fleet studies proving out the value of electric vehicles in the real world, but almost never hear from commercial fleets who are making the switch first hand – but one small fleet is doing just that, sharing their experience on Reddit for everyone to see.
Over at the /electricvehicles subreddit, a Redditor going by Wonderful_Ear_6541 posted their company’s real world cost breakdown comparing a small fleet of work trucks and vans over the course of a year. The fleet included a 2018 Ford F-350 PowerStroke diesel, a pair of newer gas-powered F-250s, a 2022 Ford Transit, and a 2024 Ram ProMaster van.
While all of those vehicles posted four- to five-digit fuel bills, the company’s 2022 Ford E-Transit cost the company just $698 over more than twenty-seven thousand miles of all-electric miles – an absolutely staggering savings, especially when compared to the the $7,515 fuel bill racked up by the ProMaster across 29,976 miles.
For those of you doing the math, that’s over 38 miles per dollar in the electric van, compared to just 3.9 miles per dollar in the ICE van.
“EVs are dramatically cheaper to operate,” explains Wonderful_Ear_6541, “even factoring in public charging … there are inconveniences — planning, charging stops, etc. I’ve run out of charge once and had to use a generator for ~1.5 hours to limp to a fast charger. Most issues have been learning curve related,” they add, “not deal-breakers.”
There’s a lot more in terms of fuel and maintenance costs to unpack in the original post (embedded, below), but you can hit that “Read more” link, below, then let us know 6541’s experience compares with yours, in the comments.
