The Volkswagen ID.4 gets a sharp redesign and a new name you’ll recognize

Volkswagen gave its electric SUV a sleek redesign. It will also go by a new name you might recognize. With its official debut just around the corner, the new ID.4 was spotted testing, giving us a sneak peek of the updates.

Volkswagen ID.4 facelift brings a new style and more

The ID.4 went on sale in 2021 as Volkswagen’s first fully electric SUV and first dedicated EV under the “ID” family.

After production issues in the US hampered sales in 2024, the ID.4 made a comeback last year, ranking as the 10th best-selling EV in the US.

In Europe, the ID.4 was VW’s top-selling EV, helping the German automaker outsell Tesla for the first time since 2022. According to Automotive News, Volkswagen sold 274,417 electric vehicles in Europe last year, up 56% from 2024.

Tesla’s sales in Europe, on the other hand, dropped 27% year over year with 238,756 vehicles in 2025. While the Model Y was still the top-selling EV in Europe, sales fell 28% to 151,331.

The ID.4 (80,123) was the fifth-best-selling EV in Europe last year, followed by the ID.3 (78,667) in sixth and the ID.7 (76,368) in seventh.

Volkswagen apparently has no plans of slowing down. The Volkswagen ID.4 facelift was spotted for the first time during winter testing with what appears to be a complete overhaul.

The new images from Autospy reveal that Volkswagen is bringing the ID.4 closer to its upcoming next-generation EVs, like the ID.Cross SUV and ID.Polo.

Right off the bat, you can see the redesigned front bumper and headlights look nearly identical to the ID.Cross, including the LED light bar and illuminated VW badge.

The rear end received a similar update with new taillights and better overall shaping. From the side, you can see several changes, including flush door handles and what appears to be a silhouette closer to the Tiguan. The current ID.4 model is pictured below on the left for a side-by-side comparison.

Volkswagen’s design boss, Andreas Mindt, said the brand’s new design is based on three cornerstones: stability, likeability, and what he calls the “secret sauce,” which will be showcased on every upcoming model.

Although we have yet to see it, the interior is also expected to get an overhaul. Similar to the ID.Polo and ID.Polo, the ID.4 facelift will likely feature more physical buttons and an easier-to-use interface.

Like the ID.Polo, the redesigned ID.4, will use a familiar name, the ID.Tiguan, as Volkswagen shifts away from the numerical ID naming system.

Although VW didn’t publicly announce the new change, the news was confirmed during an IG Metall press conference (via Automotive News) in Germany.

Besides the exterior facelift, it will also receive a new interior with more physical buttons (as shown in the ID Polo) and also a new structural battery pack, featuring VW's new unified cell, which will allow them to offer a cheaper version with LFP cells.

The ID.Tiguanis expected to make its official debut by the end of 2026, with sales kicking off in Europe sometime this year. The US will follow shortly after. According to the report, the ID.Tiguan will replace the current ID.4 at Volkswagen’s plant in Emden, Germany. Production is scheduled to run through 2031.

The redesigned electric SUV is expected to be underpinned by an updated version of VW’s MEB+ platform, which could include LFP batteries to cut costs.

We will learn prices and final specs closer to launch, but the current 2026 VW ID.4 starts at $45,095 in the US with an EPA-estimated range of 291 miles.
