Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E drivers just gained Google Maps EV routing

Ford just made it easier for F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E drivers to charge with new EV routing features. Drivers can now see new routing info, including available Tesla Superchargers along their route for easy trip planning.

Ford launches EV routing for Google Maps

First announced at CES 2024, Ford is making it easier for EV drivers to find and charge up their vehicles. In December, Ford’s CEO Jim Farley said the company was “Absolutely” working on integrating Google Maps EV routing for Android Auto users.

Ford made good on its promise by rolling out the new EV routing features to F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E drivers on Monday.

The new features are available through an over-the-air (OTA) update. Like Apple Maps, which has been available for Mach-E drivers since March 2022, the feature makes trip planning a breeze.

Using Google Maps through Android Auto, Ford drivers can now see an estimate of their vehicle’s battery level upon arriving at a charger. You will also see recommended charging stops along your route and give you an estimate of how long it will take.

Ford’s update included a few “surprises” for EV drivers, including the ability to view Tesla Supercharger locations.

F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E drivers who have an NACS adapter can find Tesla Superchargers, select the station, and their vehicle’s battery will now be preconditioned on the way for faster charging. You can even find shops and amenities near your destination.

Anthony Philips, Ford’s product manager, said his team “saw an opportunity to provide customers with an end-to-end EV routing experience in Google Maps,” and he is proud to work with Google to make it happen.

According to Philips, those who have received the update should download the latest version of Google Maps on their smartphone and pull up the app in Android Auto.

Through its new “Power Promise,” Ford is offering those who purchase a new F-150 Lightning or Mustang Mach-E a free Level 2 home charge and covering the cost of standard installation. The new program is designed to show drivers the benefits electric vehicles offer over ICE, like charging at home.
