At the Geneva Motor Show this week, Porsche confirmed that they have so far received over 20,000 reservations for the Taycan, Porsche’s first electric car, ahead of the launch later this year.
They have increased the planned production capacity accordingly.
Detlev von Platen, Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG, made the comment:
“The overwhelming interest in the Taycan shows us that our customers and fans are just as excited about the first Porsche electric athlete as we are – and we’ve therefore increased our production capacities. The Taycan will be the most sporty and most technically advanced vehicle in its segment – a true Porsche.”
Over the last few months, we reported on Porsche publicly saying that they were considering increasing the planned capacity of Taycan production. And later, a German report claimed that they are actually going to double production to 40,000 units per year.
More recently, Albrecht Reimold, the German automaker’s head of production, said that they were conservatively planning for the production of 20,000 vehicles during the first year.
While confirming the more than 20,000 reservations today, Porsche also noted that those pre-orders came before the final design unveiling coming up in September.
In Norway alone, the automaker says that they received close to 3,000 reservations with deposits. Normally, Porsche sells only about 600 vehicles per year in the market.
Last year, the automaker said that it “enters the electric era with the new Taycan” and shared some details about its progress toward production.
The vehicle is expected to have a range of over 250 miles, but the most impressive feature is arguably the 800-volt system, which is double the voltage of most EVs and should allow a charge rate of up to 350 kW, theoretically able to charge the car to 80% in 15 minutes.
I am still unclear what the increased production capacity for the Taycan will be. Is it 20,000 units per year with some room to go over? It sounds like it.
As for the reservations, I’d note that in Europe, reservation holders had to put down €2,500, which shows some serious interest. That said, there was no deposit required in some other markets and Porsche didn’t announce the mix.
Also, like Porsche noted, that’s before the final design unveiling.
I am not sure it’s a good thing in this case because the Mission E concept, on which people are basing their reservations right now, was simply incredible and as it is often the case with legacy automakers, the production version is generally significantly toned down.
It will be interesting to see how people react to it.
Nonetheless, I am extremely excited about the Taycan launching later this year. I think it’s going to be a fun EV.
