VW teases upcoming self-driving all-electric sedan with massive 111 kWh battery pack

Over the last year, Volkswagen has been unveiling a series of electric vehicle concepts that serve as the basis of its new generation of production electric vehicles coming in 2020.

Today, VW released the first images of its latest EV concept – an all-electric sedan with autonomous driving capability.

VW’s series of “I.D.” concept vehicles are powered by the company’s new MEB platform.

There’s the I.D., which is a Golf-sized vehicle expected to be their first mass-market EV in 2020, there’s also the crossover all-electric I.D. CROZZ Concept, and then there’s the I.D. BUZZ electric microbus coming in 2022.

Now, VW confirms that it will unveil the I.D. VIZZION at the Geneva International Motor Show next month.

The German automaker teased some sketch images of the new vehicle today:

VW calls the vehicle “the technological backbone of future Volkswagen electric vehicles” and the automaker adds that the I.D. VIZZION “enables long driving ranges and maximum space utilisation at optimal costs.”

They released a few specs ahead of the unveiling. VW says that the vehicle is equipped with a dual motor powertrain with a total output of 225 kW.

The motors are powered by a massive 111 kWh battery pack, which is more energy capacity than any passenger electric car currently available.

VW claims that it will result in “a driving range of up to 665 kilometres (413 miles) when braking regeneration is factored in.”

Electrek’s Take

Yes, it’s another EV concept and not a production vehicle. I know it’s not what we want to see here, but in the case of VW, at least they are claiming that those I.D. concepts serve as the basis for their production electric cars coming to market relatively soon.

So this gives us a general idea of what’s coming in the next few years and I like the idea so far.

But with this said, other automakers like Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz are bringing new production electric cars to Geneva next month.

The leaders are clear based on that, but it’s still nice to know what VW is working on.
